While I´m quite tired of the “Omar vs. Sandy” debate, a recent post about the “strong farm system” Omar Minaya supposedly left behind in late 2010, got me thinking and looking.
To summarize, as of today, it doesn´t look as if the farm system left behind was all that good. And one big reason for the Mets´ recent and even current struggles is directly related to the lack of quality (not quantity of ) higher end homegrown talent that Minaya left behind for his predecessor. Don´t get me wrong, the system wasn´t barren either as some members of the media suggested back then. But if you take a closer look, it was mediocre at best – especially if you´re looking for potential short- and midterm help for the major league roster. And the effects are lasting.
Now, a few acknowledgements before I get into details:

The Mets signed Greg Burke on 11/7/12. He is a 30 year old righthander with only one season of MLB experience to his credit – 48 games for the 2009 San Diego Padres.
Ho-hum.
But wait…He’s a sidearmer! He pitched at AA/AAA for the Baltimore Orioles last year and saved 17 games. He posted a 1.53 ERA. He demonstrated excellent command with a 2.09 BB/9.

Jon Heyman just tweeted that the Mets are still in the relief market after signing LaTroy Hawkins. Like I said as long as Hawkins isn't the primary guy they sign to back-up Francisco then its a very good move. The Mets have signed LaTroy Hawkins to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale (on Twitter).
The 40-year-old Hawkins was effective in 42 innings for the Angels last season, pitching to a 3.64 ERA, 4.9 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9.
