In the entire history of the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals, they’ve made just one playoff appearance, which happened so long ago that Mark McGwire probably doesn’t even remember being drafted by the organization that year. (1981 for those scoring at home.) Since then, the Expos/Nationals have been a study in failure. Sure, there were those few years in the early 90s when the team was competitive under Felipe Alou, but for the most part the organization has been riddled with bad luck and underperformance. Until now, that is. Am I ready to crown the Nationals as my pre-season pick to win the NL East? No, but I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if they earned a Wild Card bid – especially with a playoff team being added in each league this year. Their starting rotation is excellent, their bullpen is solid, and their offense should be improved from what it was a year ago. Assuming their core players stay healthy, there’s no reason to think the Nats can’t challenge an aging Philadelp...

Danny Espinosa and strikeouts...

Above: what it looked like on TV when Danny Espinosa struck out looking in the 5th inning of Friday night's Nats-Marlins game; 0-3 night for Danny through 5, with 3 Ks. That's 23 strikeouts in 63 spring training ABs. That's a lot of strikeouts. That's positively Adam Dunn-esque. (Screengrab via TV/MASN.) Befriend the Nats Enquirer on Facebook. Follow us on...

Descalso leads Cards to 6-2 win over Nationals

VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- Stephen Strasburg pitched four innings in his tuneup to start on opening day for the Washington Nationals in a 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Strasburg allowed three runs, two of them earned, all in the second inning. He gave up five hits overall, striking out three and walking one. Strasburg finished spring training with a 1-4 record. He&...

Nationals 6, Braves 3

Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer and Brett Carroll hit a bases-loaded triple and scored on a throwing error as a Washington Nationals split squad defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-3 Thursday. Washington starter Edwin Jackson pitched five innings of two-hit ball after giving up 13 earned runs in his past three spring starts. One of those hits was to Atlanta's Jason Heyward, who...

Nationals Add...Zach Duke?

For a team like the Washington Nationals that entered camp with seven players who had a legitimate shot at making the team's rotation, it might seem odd to end camp by signing a 28-year-old veteran starting pitcher. That move seems even odder when you consider the Nats' pickup, Zach Duke, was just recently released by the worst team in baseball, the Houston Astros, after...

Nationals 3, Marlins 2

Giancarlo Stanton and Logan Morrison returned to the lineup for the Florida Marlins, who lost to the Washington Nationals 3-2 Friday night. Stanton, who had not played since March 11 because of wrist and knee injuries, went 0 for 2 with a walk. Morrison was out with troublesome knee since March 13. He had an RBI single in three at-bats. Ian Desmond homered to left on the first...

McGwire thankful giving back to baseball

It's his third year as a coach. Few reporters seek him out for interviews. A groundskeeper occasionally will ask him to autograph a ball. But mostly Mark McGwire is left alone to do his job, in the batting cages, out of the spotlight. Just how he likes it. Here at spring training, he is not Mark McGwire, former home run king, or Mark McGwire, admitted steroid user. He is Mark...

Nationals sign left handed pitcher Zach Duke

According to Mark Zuckerman of CSNWashington, the Washington Nationals have signed left handed pitcher Zach Duke. Zuckerman adds that Duke will report to Minor League camp and will probably be in Syracuse rotation. Duke was released by the Astros two days ago. He was 3-4 with a 4.93 ERA, 0.7 HR/9, 2.2 BB/9 and 3.8 SO/9 in 76.2 innings in 2011 with the Diamondbacks. Image by randomduck...
