Molly Knight is tweeting that Dodgers GM Ned Colletti is looking into Chase Headley. We heard last night that the Dodgers were looking for a bat. Could Headley be the mystery guy we were hearing about last night?

Colletti said that if a deal were to be consummated, it might not be before the end of the winter meetings on Thursday. "Nothing is imminent," Colletti said. "We are trying to see if there is a player who would upgrade us a little bit."As the day goes on we should hear some whispers in the wind on what's going on over in Dallas. Colletti also said, when asked if the player he is trying to acquire is an everyday player, “He has been.” Colletti wouldn't specify the player or the team, shocker.

So what do we know about Chase Headley? Um, he's a third baseman for the San Diego Padres. Honestly I don't follow the Padres, why would I? I am a bleeding Dodger blue over here. So I did what I always do when I hear about a rumor, dive in baby, dive in. So here we go, Chase Headley is a 27 year-old third baseman. He has been with the San Diego organization since 2005. Headley was drafted by the Padres in the 2nd round of the 2005 amateur draft. Headley’s first full season didn't come until 2008, however he had 21 plate appearances in the majors during the 2007 season. I know you want to see some stats, well thanks to Baseball-Reference.com as they helped in providing this handy dandy chart below. Ta-da!

So Headley provides some somewhat decent production, hardly a big bat though he has a scattered pattern of hitting a few out each season. Still not the definition of a big bat under any circumstances. Headley also primarily plays third base so my thought here is the Dodgers are perhaps trying to ditch Juan Uribe, because there is no doubt Headley is certainly an upgrade over Uribe. Reading between the lines a bit, it certainly seems the Dodgers are trying to move several pieces, perhaps making two or three trades to put the icing on the 2012 roster.
Tony Jackson added his take on the report saying, "that would seem to suggest a veteran in the twilight of his career, a right-handed hitter and a guy who is more of a gap-to-gap, line-drive hitter than a power hitter. Colletti specifically said he wasn't looking for a flyball hitter." This certainly fits the description of Headley, but again not necessarily a big bat under most peoples definition. Then again, Colletti doesn't fit under the category of most people.
