Bartolo Colon When it comes to the Oakland Athletics and the MLB All-Star game, the A’s always seem to fall short. This year, Josh Donaldson was suppose to be the surest bet that an Athletic would make it onto the All-Star team. However, with less than a million votes, he fell way behind his competitors. But then there is Jed Lowrie, who is currently 4th in the voting, and Yoenis Cespedes and Coco Crisp, who are ranked 9th and 10th respectively. However, with bigger names far ahead of them and the voting deadline quickly approaching, it does not look like any active A’s players will be voted onto the All-Star roster this year. But then we turn and look at the Athletics starting pitching rotation. There sits 40-year-old Bartolo Colon. Even at his age and weight, he has been consistent, reliable, and almost perfect this season. Colon is definitely All-Star material. Recently named the American League Pitching for the month of June, Colon is showing the rest of the baseball community what he is made of. Throughout June, Colon had a perfect 5-0 record with a 1.75 ERA. This included 16 strikeouts and 9 walks in 36 innings pitched. Colon collected his first lose yesterday against the Chicago Cubs, which was due to a wild pitch thrown in the first inning. However, having gone 443 games without throwing a wild pitch, it is clear that Colon has extreme control over the strike zone and that a wild pitch is rare in his books. He will definitely continue through the rest of season with pose and success just like he has been doing during the first half of the season. Throughout 2013, Colon has been able to obtain a 11-3 record and 8-game win streak. He is the 2nd pitcher in Athletic’s history to earn 11 wins before the month of July. While his pitches tease the edges of the strike zone, his go to pitch is his fastball, which he uses more than 75% of the time. But, hey, if it strikes people out, then why change it up? He does interchange his fastball with a solid change-up and slider – both which have greatly improved this season. Even though his pitching style is very reliant on one pitch, Colon has been able to obtain an extremely low walk rate of one walk per nine innings. As long as this teammates back him up in the field, Colon will keep raking in the wins. This right handed pitcher has had a lot of experience pitching in the MLB. Over the past 15 years, Colon has played with 7 teams, claimed 4 monthly awards, and won a Cy Young Award. Even though he has had his fair share of ups and downs since 1997, those bumps along the road cannot take away from the fact that Colon has been having a great 2013 season. With the way the A’s rotation falls, Colon will be on 6 days of rest leading up to the All-Star game. Along with his skill, this makes Colon an ideal candidate for the AL All-Star team.
