Tommy Milone With the recent 3 win streak starting with their sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, the Oakland Athletics were feeling good. It seemed as though they were ready to turn things around after losing their AL West lead. As the A’s got ready for Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, they were feeling confident and prepared. But when the fourth inning rolled around and Jarrod Parker suddenly fell off the mound clutching his right hamstring, that confidence was lost. The trainer came out to the mound to evaluate Parker while he threw some test pitches. Even though it was suspected to just be hamstring tightness, Parker was taken out of the game, which caused the A’s to suffer a 1-7 lose to the Cardinals. Even though Parker came into Saturday’s game with a 4.27 ERA and 6-6 record, he had been pitching much better lately and was working a shutout before have hamstring troubles. In his last nine starts, he had a 2.59 ERA and went 5-1. Hopefully his hamstring tightness will not put him on the disable list or else the A’s bullpen will take a big blow – especially with Brett Anderson out till mid-august. Anderson has been on the DL since May 1 when he suffered from a sprained ankle. Then, while rehabilitating on minor league assignment, he suffered another setback when he acquired a stress fracture in his right foot. Now, this left handed pitcher is stuck in a walking boot and will be reevaluated after the All-Star break. Now on Sunday, we have Tommy Milone on the mound. Once a go-to pitcher, he has lost confidence in his cutter and has allowed more walks than normal this season. Additionally, this left handed pitcher has had a rough June for he has not won a game since June 3. With a 4.06 ERA, Milone will be facing the Cardinals who are 2nd in the MLB in scoring. My guess is that Milone is going to have a tough game. Since the Oakland Athletics are only .5 games back from the AL West leader, they still have a solid chance of catching up and taking the lead back. However, if Parker goes on the DL or if Milone does not gain some confidence back in his pitching, there will be more loses on the horizon. Hopefully the A’s lineup can pick up where the bullpen lacks.
