Looks like Will Smith had it right all along when he wrote the hit song some time ago “Welcome to Miami”. The Miami Marlins have made the biggest splashes of the offseason thus far by inking Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle to long term deals. Reyes’ deal is a backloaded contract to ease the transition of payroll down in Miami and to allow more payroll flexibility this winter. There is no questioning Reyes’ talent, as he is one of the most productive threats in the game while on the field. That has been just it, keeping him on the field, as Reyes has been know to be a bit injury prone over the duration of his career. Most recently encountering hamstring issues that popped back up for a second time during the 2011 season. All the drama lately has been surrounding not the Reyes signing, but the fact that Miami reportedly never consulted incumbent SS and uber-talented Hanley Ramirez about an inevitable defensive position change. It’s quite obvious that Reyes is both the current and futur...

Miami Marlins Receive Encouraging News on Josh Johnson

The Miami Marlins received encouraging news on staff ace Josh Johnson Friday. Johnson threw his first bullpen session Friday and felt no discomfort in his shoulder that kept him out most of the 2011 season. Johnson is expected to be ready for workouts February 22 and could be at full health by the start of the 2012 season. The Marlins and Josh Johnson are hoping that he can be a...

The New Marlins Ballpark Looks Pretty Sweet

The new home of the Miami Marlins is just about ready to go, and I’m not going to lie – it looks pretty sweet. From the website: The future home of the Marlins will be a first-class baseball stadium that will be owned by Miami-Dade County. It will be constructed on approximately 17 acres of the historic 42-acre Orange Bowl site in the Little Havana section of Miami...

Yoenis Cespedes To Leave U.S After Only Visiting The Miami Marlins

Yoenis Cespedes is the hottest free-agent in  baseball right now, and the best. He has dominated everything thrown at home him while playing in the Cuban National League. Last season Cespedes put up a great stat line of .333/.424/.667 with 89 runs, 33 Home Runs, and 99 RBI in only 99 games. Cespedes not only has power, and can hit for average but his speed is pretty good as well...

Report: Marlins make offer to Cuban outfielder Cespedes

The Miami Marlins have reportedly made a six-year, $40 million contract offer to Cuban-born outfielder Yeonis Cespedes, according to Eric Reynoso of Cafe Fuerte.Cespedes was in Miami on a travel visa Wednesday. He toured the team's new ballpark and spoke to club officials. The 26-year-old is currently being blocked by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets...

Marlins Bring Back Five

Logan Morrison will switch to number five in 2012, a number never worn by a Marlin.   This number is significant to Morrison because it is the number worn by his father’s favorite player — George Brett.   The Marlins since starting play in 1993 have had the number retired to honor the first President in franchise history, Carl Barger. Tragically, Mr. Barger passed...

Yoenis Cespedes will bring more than just power to the Miami Marlins

There are two sides of the coin to any situation. There are yin’s and yang’s to the MLB value of CF Yoenis Cespedes, a Cuban defector who smashed the competition in the World Baseball Classic. Miami Marlins President David Samson has made no secret that the front office desires CF Yoenis Cespedes to be their everyday center fielder and is pursuing a deal aggressively...

Video: Hanley Ramirez has message for critics in new Powerade commercial

Miami Marlins third baseman Hanley Ramirez is one of the better all-around players in Major League Baseball. He was the National League’s Rookie of the Year in 2006, has been named to 3 All-Star teams, and finished 2nd in the NL MVP voting in 2009. 2011 was one to forget with Hanley posting [...]

MLB Opinion: Yoenis Cespedes Can Be an Impact Player in the Bigs

The latest rumor in the Yoenis Cespedes sweepstakes has the Miami Marlins offering less than $40 million for the Cuban defector. While Cespedes has yet to negotiate with any other teams, a $40 million price tag seems reasonable for 6 years for the 26 year old. Cespedes can not sign a contract until he is unblocked by OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) and the list of additional...

MMO Fair or Foul: Mets Are Waving The White Flag?

Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported today that the Mets are one of five teams waving the white flag. Here is the segment he wrote on the Mets… The Mets’ payroll has dropped roughly $50 million since this time last year. They lost popular shortstop Jose Reyes because they weren’t able to match the Marlins’ offer — a notion that would have seemed absurd two years ago...

Social Leadership

When we last left Hanley Ramirez, he was deciding whether he was happy or angry about moving to third base for Jose Reyes. As we catch up with Hanley now, he's found a new way to use social media (courtesy of Big League Stew):So Hanley is writing twitter handles on a bat with a black sharpie. I'm surprised he didn't write the names on his...
