The Phils defeat the Cubs in a laugher, winning 12-1. The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the second as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits an RBI infield single, scoring Darin Ruf, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third base on Cody Asche’s double, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, while sending Asche, who had just doubled, up to third base. The Phils then made it a 2-0 lead one batter later as Michael Martinez hits an RBI single, scoring Asche, while sending Mayberry over to third base. The Phils then made it a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third as, with one man on, and with one man out, Ruf hits a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the season, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier doubled. The Cubs got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Nate Schierholtz hits a lead-off home run, his fifteenth home run of the year, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-7-13

Ongoing service announcement: We are currently in the middle of a migration process to a more secure server. Perhaps you’ve noticed some technical difficulties of various magnitude; we’ve been under attacks from spambots for a few months now. Our migration should help alleviate these problems; unfortunately, for the next 2 or 3 days, we’re running at reduced effectiveness due...

Cubs rumors: Cubs unlikely to make big August trades

The Chicago Cubs were the busiest team in the Major Leagues regarding July trades. They pulled off trade after trade all month long in effort to strengthen their Minor League system, and many experts believe they did a terrific job. Still, though, not all of the Cubs' veterans -- even those heavily rumored -- found new teams. Players such as Dioner Navarro, David DeJesus, Nate...

Cubs place Scott Baker's rehab on hold

Look, there's nothing more frustrating than being place on hold. Feel free to ask recovering Chicago Cubs starter Scott Baker, on his opinions of the matter. A lack of progress, has temporarily shut down his rehab stint and will tentatively see him resume throwing next week. After four rehab starts under his belt, Baker will essentially start over and be given a fresh 30 days...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-9-13

Chicago Cubs 3 @ St Louis Cardinals 0 The Cubs shut out the Cards in St. Louis for the first time since the eighties last night. Perhaps more surprisingly, Chris Rusin was most responsible for it. 6 innings of 7 hit, 2 walk, 5 K scoreless ball? A 3.08 ERA? The regression is going to be ugly as hell, but for now, please enjoy Chris Rusin, Magician. James Russell got two outs in...

Chase Utley steamrolls Dioner Navarro at home

In the seventh inning of a tie game last night, the Phillies third base coach waved around Chase Utley to try and score on a base hit to right field. Cubs right fielder Cole Gillespie gathered the line drive on a couple bounces and fired to home plate, one-hopping it to Chicago catcher Dioner Navarro, who was attempting to block the plate. Right as the throw reached Navarro, Utley...

Recap: Cubs get 1st shutout in St. Louis in 16 years

ST. LOUIS -- Anthony Rizzo had a two-run single, Chris Rusin pitched around seven hits in six innings, and the Chicago Cubs recorded their first shutout in St. Louis in 16 years with a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals on Friday night. Rusin (2-1) twice worked out of bases-loaded jams and only set the Cardinals down in order in the first. He struck out a season-high five and issued...

Samardzija smashed, Phils roll to 12-1 win

Manager Dale Sveum was hoping that Jeff Samardzija could give the Cubs a lengthy outing Thursday but those wishes dissolved quickly. Philadelphia tagged Samardzija for 11 hits in only 3 1/3 innings as the Cubs suffered a 12-1 loss marking their sixth loss in their past seven games. This equaled the shortest start of Samardzija's career with the Phillies knocking him out on...

Dioner Navarro gets crushed by Chase Utley in collision at home plate

In the seventh inning of a tie game last night, the Phillies third base coach waved around Chase Utley to try and score on a base hit to right field. Cubs right fielder Cole Gillespie gathered the line drive on a couple bounces and fired to home plate, one-hopping it to Chicago catcher Dioner Navarro, who was attempting to block the plate. Darin Ruf's MLB Man Cave Interview

I was searching for something on Darin Ruf, since he's one of the few good things going for the Phillies right now, and I came across this video from last year. He seems like a levelheaded guy and I hope he can continue to improve defensively in the outfield, because the Phils need his bat in the lineup. Perhaps he secures a starting gig for next season, along with Revere and...

Busch-bound Cubs are lowly, but not necessarily pushovers

ST. LOUIS -- After being roughed up in a stretch against four likely playoff teams, a series against the lowly Cubs would seem to be just what the Cardinals need to return to their winning ways. But there are reasons to think this three-game set at Busch Stadium will not be a walkover. Start with the Cubs' Friday night starter, Chris Rusin. The 26-year-old Kentuckian is a rookie...

Tale of Two Prospects

Thursday night I invited myself to the Triple A debut of Kyle Hendricks. He was neither exciting nor disappointing. He is a pair of blue jeans, not a tuxedo. He is a home cooked meal, not a night on the town. He is someone we could get used to. Tags: Iowa Cubs updateRead more about Tale of Two Prospects

Mr. Cub to receive highest civilian honor from President Barack Obama

Mr. Cub (file photo) Former Chicago Cubs SS/1B Ernie Banks has been named by President Barack Obama to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor given in the United States of America.  Affectionately known as “Mr. Cub” in the Windy City, Banks was known for his unusual power for a middle infielder, as well as his positive attitude (famously quoted...

Phillies Nation TV: Bastardo’s suspension, First base platoon, Cody Asche and Ethan Martin

With the Phillies’ playoff chances fading fast, Pat and Corey discuss some silver linings in this week’s episode of Phillies Nation TV. Specifically, Cody Asche and Ethan Martin are new guys worth giving a chance in the waning weeks of the season. Also, Cole Hamels has quietly rebounded after a rocky stretch and Domonic Brown is back in the lineup. Ryann brings questions from...

A Blowout WIn, A New Phillie, A Few Firsts, An Era Continues...

A rather exciting afternoon today at Citizens Bank Park. It was one of the more impressive offensive displays of the season from the Phillies. After breaking his on base streak last night, Darin Ruf wound up on base three times today, including a home run. Cody Asche hit his first...
