PLAYERS: Evan Longoria
TEAMS: Tampa Bay Rays

Friday was the day St. Petersburg developer, CityScape LLC, made their pitch to the Tampa Bay Rays and the public on a stadium proposal. But after their pitch was made, many questions and concerns still remained

If anyone has ever driven through Carillon, they would ask, “How the heck will they fit a stadium in here?” The proposed stadium site in the Carillon park area of North St. Petersburg contains several business and residences with winding two-lane roads not suitable enough for stadium traffic. Publix Supermarket, Courtside Grille, Tropical Smoothie, Regions Bank, and Suntrust Bank are all targets of being replaced by the developer to use it as the stadium’s retail and residential space.

The developing group also provided several options for the style of roof and back wall they are proposing the stadium to have:

  • Option 1: Retractable, transparent roof and retractable, transparent wall, $577 million
  • Option 2: Fixed, transparent roof and retractable, transparent wall, $548 million
  • Option 3: Fixed, transparent roof and fixed, transparent wall, $540 million
  • Option 4: Open air stadium and no transparent wall, $424 million
  • Option 5: Retractable transparent roof and fixed transparent wall, $564 million

A big problem in the area is space for parking. That area is extremely limited. In their presentation, they display parking within Carillon Park and claim they have found enough parking. But as the diagram illustrates below, their claims of parking consists of established companies parking lots. Are they planning on replacing them as well? Or maybe they are expecting those businesses to shut down so their employees can leave just to free up parking for the games.

Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

It was a nice attempt by CityScape but unfortunately there are more issues than rewards for the area. So perhaps the developers can come up with another idea, at another time, for another location. Their “Rays Park at Carillon” proposal struck out looking and failed miserably.

Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings swings at pitchout, pops out (video)

Sometimes for a batter, it’s best to just leave the bat resting on your shoulder or wherever each respective batter leaves the bat. The point is, oftentimes, swinging just gets a hitter into trouble, as was the case with Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings who took a mighty cut at a pitch and popped [...]

Ben Zobrist Shows Off Juggling Skills in Front of Thousands of Fans (Video)

You knew Ben Zobrist could hit and play basically any position. But did you know that he can juggle, too? Zobrist started at shortstop in Tampa Bay's Saturday matchup against the White Sox and was in perfect position on a ball hit by Dayan Viciedo. But a routine play turned into quite the affair. Zobrist had the ball go off of his glove, then off of the top of his hat, then back...

Ben Zobrist uses his head, literally, to field grounder (Video)

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Ben Zobrist managed to field a grounder that bounced from his glove to his head, but still made the out after the ball bounced back into his glove during Friday night's MLB game against the Chicago White Sox. In the bottom of the second inning, White Sox batter Dayan Viciedo hit the grounder to Zobrist, who displayed great concentration in staying...

Price pitches Rays past White Sox

Manager Joe Maddon and the Tampa Rays have been down this road before. Almost out of the race for a playoff spot, yet fighting to the end. That approach worked a year ago when the Rays staged a stunning final-game rally to beat the Yankees and win the AL wild card. Now, after downing the fading White Sox on Sunday with David Price getting his 20th win, the Rays still have a chance...

Zobrist fields a ground ball off his hat

. Well, this is certainly unique. In Friday's 3-1 Rays loss to the White Sox, Rays shortstop Ben Zobrist (really, he's at short now?) had a grounder from Dayan Viciedo bounce off his glove, bounce off of his head for a second, and fall back into his glove, allowing Zobrist to throw Viciedo out at first in plenty of time. Talk about something you don't see every day.... [follow]
