We’ve been talking about the Bucs’ offensive woes since the season started, and today they were more apparent than ever.

Matt Cain was absolutely dominant. He carried a perfect game late into the sixth inning until James McDonald broke it up with a single. Yep, James McDonald. Cain struck out 11, didn’t walk anyone, and was very efficient with his pitches (106). McDonald was the only baserunner all game. A single by the pitcher was all that stood between Cain and a perfect game.

There’s not much more to say. Cain is a great pitcher, but the Pirates looked dreadful yet again. They may be a bad offensive club, but they can’t be THIS bad. At some point they need to just snap out of it–and they need to do it soon, as they’ve now lost four in a row with more tough opponents on tap.

McDonald didn’t seem right early on – he was leaving the ball up in the zone, and the Giants made him pay for it with two runs in the first. Obviously that was all Cain would need, but McDonald kept it together and managed to make it 5.2 innings with only one more run as damage. He settled down a bit, but a lot of his outs were hit hard and he only struck out one. He couldn’t find control of his curveball all afternoon.

As for the bullpen, Tony Watson and Evan Meek tossed scoreless innings. Joel Hanrahan (getting work in since he hasn’t pitched since Sunday) allowed two essentially meaningless runs in the 8th.

Giants 5, Pirates 0 / Box / 2012 Record: 2-5 / Next: Saturday, at Giants, 9:05

MVP: Watson (+.011) / LVP: McDonald (-.198) / Key play: Buster Posey‘s first inning double
