Found August 13, 2012 on Dempsey's Army:
The emergent stars in the Orioles bullpen, the best in the American League, have been Jim Johnson, establishing himself as an elite closer in 2012 and Pedro Strop as the setup man with the electric fastball.

However, they have not been the best duo in the Baltimore pen. That honor belongs to Darren O'Day and Troy Patton.

Patton and O'Day do not operate in the glamorous 8th and 9th innings, not typically anyway. They do not possess live fastballs that sit in the mid-90's or rack up saves. They just do all the dirty work and do it better than anyone else.

Some stats pulled from FanGraphs.com:

Name K/9 BB/9 K/BB HR/9 K% BB% WHIP ERA FIP E-F xFIP SIERA
Darren O'Day 8.68 1.54 5.63 0.77 24.20% 4.30% 0.99 2.51 2.92 -0.42 3.51 2.9
Troy Patton 8.25 1.89 4.36 0.86 22.80% 5.20% 1.03 2.58 3.25 -0.67 3.33 2.89
Pedro Strop 7.14 4.35 1.64 0.17 19.80% 12.10% 1.1 1.22 3.38 -2.16 3.85 3.51
Jim Johnson 4.99 2.22 2.25 0.55 13.70% 6.10% 1.09 3.33 3.71 -0.38 3.79 3.18

O'Day and Patton lead Johnson and Strop, as well as the rest of the Oriole bullpen, in every major rate and fielding independent stat in the game. With fastballs that average about 85 mph and 89 mph, O'Day are 1st and 2nd in strikeout rate respectively. Their walk rates and WHIPs are lower, their K/BB rates are higher and their Fielding Independent stats, especially the ones that account for batted ball data, are superior.

Now, I have absolutely no issues with a tandem of late innings closers like Johnson and Strop who induce groundballs at rates higher than 65%. That probably helps to keep leads better than flyball pitchers like Patton and O'Day. But make no mistake, O'Day and Patton have been the better pitchers during the Orioles' improbably playoff chase this season.

Orioles select Romero's contract

The Orioles selected the contract of left-handed pitcher J.C. Romero, who was acquired on Monday from Cleveland. Romero's only major-league action this season came with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he was 0-0 with a 10.13 ERA for the Cards. The Orioles also recalled right-handed pitcher Steve Johnson from Triple-A Norfolk and placed left-handed pitcher Troy Patton on the...

Orioles’ Machado is Co-American League Player of the Week

MLB Network is reporting that Baltimore Orioles’ rookie sensation Manny Machado is co-American League Player of the Week for August 6th to the 12th. Machado, playing in only four games this week — the first four of his career — secured a .375 batting average, a 1.500 OPS, three home runs, a triple, a double, and seven RBIs. Machado shares the honor with the Red Sox’ Adrian...

Machado part of win-now O's strategy

OK, I've yet to hear a sufficient explanation for why Manny Machado started only two games at third base in Double-A before the Baltimore Orioles promoted him to play that position in the majors. One club official said the team did not want to alarm the major league third basemen, Wilson Betemit and Mark Reynolds (poor babies). Another said the team didn't want to put too...

Reynolds homers twice to power Orioles past Red Sox

BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles got hits when they needed to Tuesday -- and the Boston Red Sox didn't. Mark Reynolds homered twice and drove in four runs, and Wei-Yin Chen gave up one run in six-plus innings as the Orioles defeated the Red Sox 7-1 in the opener of a three-game series. Reynolds, who has struggled all season, had his first multi-homer game of the year. He...

Mark Reynolds Launches Two 'Disaster Warning' Home Runs as Red Sox Fail to Seize Another Opportunity (Video)

Mark Reynolds will see your tornado warnings and raise you two home runs. The Baltimore slugger bashed two home runs against the Red Sox and Josh Beckett was awarded another loss as the Sox season took another step closer to its inexorable end. Despite serious weather issues threatening, the Orioles showed no signs of distraction and powered themselves to a 6.5-game lead over the...

Orioles Own Red Sox and Take First Game of Series...

In a year that has been the Baltimore Orioles do the improbable, they earned another win over the struggling Red Sox last night to start their three game series at Camden Yards, 7-1. The Baltimore offense led the team to victory with a five-run sixth inning that finished off Boston, and Mark Reynolds – whose struggles need little mentioning in ’12 – blasted two homers. They...

Orioles 7, Red Sox 1

BALTIMORE-Mark Reynolds homered twice and drove in four runs while starter Wei-Yin Chen gave up one run in six-plus innings as the Orioles defeated Boston, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night. Reynolds snapped a 1-1 tie with his first homer, a solo shot in the fifth. He then broke the game open with a three-run shot in the sixth that gave the Orioles their six...

Orioles Split Series with Royals; Machado Does it Again...

It’s looking like things will be a lot different for Orioles fans in summer of 2012 than what we are used to as fans. Rather than relaxing at the ballpark and waiting the season to play out, plus focusing on football, I’m now doing more scoreboard watching than ever. It’s fun to watching some meaningful baseball in these parts. Instead of being out of contention by now,...

Recap: Sox catch a beatin' in Baltimore

The optimism stemming from the 14-1 victory over the Indians was short-lived as the Sox got knocked back down again in Baltimore, losing 7-1. Nothing was going for the Sox tonight, with the only positive being the return introduction of Andrew Bailey. Josh Beckett pitched well through the first 4 innings, surrendering only 1 run, a solo homer. Another run came in the 5th ( another...

Machado doesn't take long to win AL weekly honors

Manny Machado's big debut is national news at this point. The Baltimore Orioles rookie infielder, who was called up Thursday, was named the American League Co-Player of the Week on Monday for a period ending Sunday. He shared the honor with Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Through four games, Machado is 6-for-16 with a double, a triple, three homers, seven RBI...

Fantasy Baseball Call Up Report: Manny Machado

I have failed you. This should’ve been posted two weeks ago, but I was blindsided along with the rest of the baseball universe when the Baltimore Orioles called up super prospect Manny Machado. Machado, a  20-year-old righty, who stands 6’2?, 190 lbs, had a few growing pains as he progressed quickly through the minors. No one thought he’d get more than a vente cup of coffee...

Orioles Acquire LHP J.C. Romero

The Orioles acquired LHP J.C. Romero from Cleveland on Monday.

Orioles acquire lefty reliever Romero

Left-handed reliever J.C. Romero is back with the Orioles organization after Baltimore acquired him Monday from the Cleveland Indians organization in exchange for minor league infielder Carlos Rojas. Romero will be added to the Orioles' 25-man and 40-man rosters Tuesday, and he'll join Troy Patton to give the team a second left-handed reliever. The 36-year-old veteran...
