As an avid fan of amateur baseball, and incidentally the draft, I was displeased, to say the least, to hear about the Sox decision to re-sign Varitek. It wasn't that I had high hopes that he'd net us two picks, because obviously no team's general manager was foolish give up their first round pick for a 37 year-old rapidly declining catcher who possesses a noodle for an arm. It had more to do with the fact that, when comparing Varitek to similar catchers of his caliber and taking today's economy into effect, this is just bad management on the Sox part. However, this is no longer here nor there, and I think every rational Sox fan agrees with this. Not to belabor an already conspicuous thought, but with the games played incentive that was so generously added by Mr. John Henry & Co., and Tito Francona's persistence on sticking with his veterans, one can safely presume that Varitek will get the vast majority of the at-bats coming from the catching position. So now...
