Found March 05, 2013 on Indians Baseball Insider:
Then & Now is a weekly feature at Indians Baseball Insider during the offseason that takes a look at a player's past and present while also offering a possible glimpse into the player's future. It was a busy offseason for the Cleveland Indians as a number of significant moves were made to address some glaring holes exposed last season. Lack of right-handed hitters? Mark Reynolds, Nick Swisher and Drew Stubbs should balance that out. Lack of power? Again, Reynolds and Swisher should play a key role in alleviating the Tribe’s power outage. What about speed? Stubbs and Michael Bourn have it in bunches. Yet, despite all the moves that the team made, there still seems to be a big hole in regard to left-handed relievers in the team’s bullpen. That could be where a guy like Nick Hagadone comes into play. Then: Hagadone was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 36th round of the 2004 MLB Draft though he did not sign and went on to carve out a solid collegiate career ...

2013 Indians Top 60 Prospects: #12 1B Jesus Aguilar

The IBI's 2013 Indians Top 60 Prospect countdown continues on with first baseman Jesus Aguilar. Aguilar is a guy that a lot of Indians fans and the organization themselves are excited about because good right-handed power is hard to find. He certainly has that and then some, and is arguably the best power prospect in the entire system. Tony talks about that power potential and...

2013 Indians Top 60 Prospects: #13 OF Luigi Rodriguez

The IBI's 2013 Indians Top 60 Prospect countdown continues on with outfielder Luigi Rodriguez. Defensively and offensively the Indians feel like Rodriguez has as much talent as anybody in the organization, it is just a matter of him putting it together to be more consistent as a player day by day rather than in streaks throughout the year. Tony discusses all the abilities he...

2013 Spring Training Game #13: Indians 4, Giants 3

Apparently hitting home runs was as viral as the Harlem Shake in Scottsdale, Arizona on Tuesday as the Indians slugged their way to a 4-3 victory over the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants. Both teams collected their share of runs via the long ball as Cleveland hitters clubbed three solo blasts while the Giants belted two of their own. Tribe bullpen hopeful Bryan...

Indians Outfield Defense: How Improved Will It Be?

I’m going to be honest with you: I have my misgivings about advanced defensive metrics—especially those that are publicly available to schmoes like you and me.  1   It’s not that I think the methodology behind these stats is flawed or that the approach itself is a silly one—it’s just that all these metrics seem a bit too reliant on two somewhat flimsy inputs. First...

2013 Spring Training Game #12: Indians 13, Cubs 5

Overview Now that’s more like it. The Cleveland Indians snapped a two-game losing streak and got back to their winning ways with a 13-5 victory against the Chicago Cubs in Mesa, Ariz. on Monday. In all honesty, this may have been the most impressive outing by the Indians this season. While they did allow five runs in the contest, the pitching was better than the score indicates...

Carrasco goes 3 innings after being hit in head

Carlos Carrasco pitched three innings after being hit in the side of the head by a comebacker in the first, Mark Reynolds and Nick Swisher each homered to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 13-5 Monday. Carrasco was hit on the side of the head by Darnell McDonald's line drive. Carrasco went down on his knees and was tended to by trainers but stayed in the game...

Cleveland Indians 2013 Top 21 Prospects List

Indians 4, Dodgers 0

Jason Giambi drove in two runs and Justin Masterson outpitched Hyun-Jin Ryu on Wednesday, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 42-year-old Giambi signed a minor league deal with Cleveland just ahead of the start of spring training with hopes of playing one more season in an 18-year career. He singled and hit a sacrifice fly to pace the Indians...

Closer Look

Chris Perez has been shut down for 3-4 weeks. The Indians are saying it's due to a shoulder strain. Seems pretty coincidental that Chris Perez rocks a mullet and there's a guy with a "business on top, party in the back" haircut on The Amazing Race this season. I'm calling BS. "Yeah, what's up?" Sorry, didn't mean to actually call BS. ...

Mike Aviles Reunites With Former Teammates During Red Sox’ Scrimmage With Puerto Rico (Video)

A familiar face was back in Fort Myers on Tuesday. Former Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles returned to JetBlue Park as a member of Team Puerto Rico, which dropped a 4-3 decision to the Sox in a World Baseball Classic tune-up. Aviles has had a tumultuous offseason, first being traded to Toronto in exchange for manager John Farrell (a deal that he called “weird”) before being shipped...

Ryu allows two in Dodgers' loss vs. Indians

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Jason Giambi thought he would be a manager this season. Instead, he's still playing. Giambi drove in two runs and Justin Masterson outpitched Hyun-Jin Ryu on Wednesday, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. After interviewing for the Colorado Rockies' managerial opening -- which went to Walt Weiss -- the 42-year...

The Corner of Carnegie and Ontario celebrates Ubaldo?

I just can help but cringe when I say the name Ubaldo Jimenez. I was never a fan of the deal that brought him here, and that certainly hasn’t changed over the past 1 ½ years. When he signed my daughter’s baseball last year, I honestly thought, “Holy cow, he just ruined that ball. If I throw it, it’s going to hit the dirt a foot in front of the plate, or end up somewhere...

Cubs Pitchers Now Know How Custer Felt

Nick Swisher singled twice, homered, and drove-in four runs, Lonnie Chisenhall singled, doubled, and homered, and collected three RBI, Drew Stubbs singled and tripled and drove-in three runs, and Mark Reynolds homered and doubled and knocked-in two runs, leading a 20-hit attack as the Clevaland Indians scalped the Cubs 13-5 in Cactus League action this afternoon at Dwight Paterson...
