(Photo/CSSNE) The Chicago Cubs have claimed Daniel Bard off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. To make room for the reliever, outfielder Cole Gillespie has been designated for assignment by the Cubs. Bard will be reunited with his former General Manager and current Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein from their time together with the Red Sox organization. The former top-100 prospect had back-to-back outstanding seasons in 2010 and 2011. Bard tossed 74.2 innings in 2010, his best season with the Red Sox, posting a 1-2 record with 32 holds, 76 strikeouts and an era of 1.93 earned run average. He followed up the 2010 season with a almost equally as good 2011 season. In 2011, Bard set the club record with 25 consecutive scoreless appearances, running from May 27 to July 31, 2011. The reliever posted a 2-9 record with a 3.33 earned run average, 34 holds and 74 strikeouts over 73 innings. The most recent siting of Bard was with the Spinners (Single-A) on Saturday night where he tossed one inning of work with a wild pitch, walking four and striking out two. This new location for Bard could be just what he needs to revive his declining career. He moves from one organization with a historical ballpark and a once longtime drought without a championship to another in the Chicago Cubs.
