Today Fred Wilpon addressed the media and stated that the payroll decrease wasn't due to financial restraints but more a baseball decision due to unproductive players.

"No, that was in conjunction with our baseball people. . . . No, but remember, we had payroll that wasn't even on the field, and some of it that was on the field wasn't very productive. . . . Your correlation is higher payroll, better team in every single case, and I'm not sure that that has proven to be the case. The Mets have had the highest payroll for numbers of years and we weren't successful. source Newsday

As most of us know the Mets have decreased salary by almost 50M dollars, some have indicated that it's the largest decrease by a team in one season in the history of baseball.  The idea that the decreased payroll was a result of unproductive players doesn't hold water and says nothing for re-investing money into the organization.

It's true 23.9M dollars was invested in unproductive players in Perez, Castillo, Young,  Paulino and Igarashi.

But the Mets spent 47.6M on productive players in Beltran, Rodriguez, Reyes, Capuano and Isringhasen.

Aside from Pagan who was replaced by comparable salary of the 1M dollar players they had over 70 M come off the books, 47M was in productive players and only re-invested 20M into salary.

The other 11 players who did not return were replaced by players with comparable salaries and making below 1M a year.

There were expensive players who were cut early and considered bad contracts but most of the expensive players from the 2011 roster were very productive players.  Saying that salary was reduced as a result of unproductive players and a baseball decision is a really  poor attempt at spin and throws his baseball people under the bus who thought at one point this off-season they would have another 20M to spend (120M payroll).

20M- Carlos Beltran
12.1M- Francisco Rodriguez
12M-Oliver Perez
11M- Jose Reyes
6.25M-Louis Castillo
3.5M- Angel Pagan
1.75M-Ryota Igarashi
1.5M-Chris Capuano
1.35M- Ronny Paulino
1.1M-Chris Young
1M- Jason Isringhausen
