The Pittsburgh Pirates are in first place at the halfway mark of the 2013 Major League Baseball season. Not only that, they’re currently on a 9-game winning streak, and owners of the best record in baseball at 21 games over .500 (51-30). The last time they were this good, Barry Bonds had a normal sized body and Sid Bream was doing this.
It was 1992. The Montreal Expos were still in existence. The Marlins and Rockies were not. The Brewers were in the American League. The Astros were in the National League. The Halos were the California Angels. And the Cubs were still pretty bad. So even though some things remain the same year after year, most do not. The statistical probability of something remaining completely unchanged since 1992 is nearly impossible, unless, of course, we’re talking about Steve Martin’s hair color. This includes the longest streak of being unable to field a winning team in the four major sports – MLB, NHL, NBA, and NFL. Specifically, I’m speaking abou...

Wandy Rodriguez will be out for three more weeks. Photo Credit: David Hague
Wandy Rodriguez has received a few setbacks in the past week. He had some tightness in his forearm, and was shut down. Today he received Platelet Rich Plasma injections, which will put him out for three weeks. Even when he starts back up, you’re looking at a few weeks of rehab starts, which means the Pirates...

Garrett Jones HR gets stuck in fan's cup. Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Garrett Jones hit a home run to center field that got stuck in a fan's empty cup during Tuesday night's game at PNC Park against the Philadelphia Phillies. The HR by Jones wasn't a straight shot into the cup, but it did prove impossible to get the ball out of the cup despite the best efforts...
Below are the top Runs Created* totals in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The rankings include every hitter who had an at-bat for a Pirates’ minor league affiliate, not including DSL teams, and with no limitations on whether the hitter has prospect eligibility. Players who spent time at different levels are counted multiple times, once for each level,...

A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today. Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates...
Anyone who has had the pleasure, or displeasure, of reading The Show Speak over the last few years understands the Pittsburgh Pirates are my Achilles heal when it comes to predictions - and it is not like I am some sort of a Nate Silver protege.
The Pirates are the primary reason I am formally scared scarred from making baseball predictions.
Let's look at the facts...
Jim Callis has the signing bonus for 14th round pick Nick Buckner, and the amount is surprising.
One more pool-relevant bonus blank to fill in: #Pirates 14th-rder Nick Buckner, $135k. Texas HS OF, big raw power, Houston commit. #mlbdraft

The Pirates signed Buckner and 16th round pick Billy Roth last week, both to over-slot deals. Both...
We have seen this scene before in Pittsburgh. The last two seasons, they have started off hot, building false confidence in their fan base that for the first time in two decades their Pirates were again relevant.
In 2011, they won more than 70 games for the first time since 2004, but with a 72-90 record, their losing season streak marched on to 19 straight years. In 2012,...
This comes straight from the Pirates themselves, as everyone that covers the team tweeted out something along these lines almost simultaneously:
#Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez has been given a PRP injection and will be on a rest, treatment and rehab plan for three weeks, per team.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma....

The Pirates have not announced their starting rotation for this week’s series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Brandon Cumpton was re-called Tuesday to pitch the first game of the series and the season’s second half tonight.
Jeanmar Gomez and Jeff Locke are considered...
Pirate Parrot who is the mascot for the Pittsburgh Pirates tried his best, but failed, to snag a foul ball during Sunday’s game between the Pirates and Brewers. The result is a pretty great .GIF

Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez batted .309 in the month of June with 10 home runs as he powered the Pirates to the top spot in the National League Central Division. Alvarez is hitting .239 for the season with 20 home runs and 53 RBI. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko caught up with Alvarez recently.
This is how the first half of the season comes to a close: with a 2 1/2 hour rain delay that puts Charlie Morton on the shelf after just two innings and 22 pitches. With five perfect Vin Mazzaro innings in relief of Morton. With Justin Wilson, Bryan Morris, Jason Grilli, and Mark Melancon all following Mazzaro's masterful work with scoreless innings of their own. With Tony Watson...
The second half of the season begins tonight, with the Pirates defending the best record in baseball and sending Brandon Cumpton to the mound. That's one crazy sentence. Because of the Pirates' 14-inning game against the Brewers necessitated him to warm up, Jeff Locke's start is being pushed back a bit. Because Sunday was Jeanmar Gomez's day to throw a bullpen session...
The West Virginia Power took the four series in Lakewood today, with a comeback win, giving them three wins against the BlueClaws in this set and they have now beat them in 13 of 16 meetings this year. Down 4-2 going into the ninth inning, the Power drew three straight walks to start the frame. After a sacrifice fly made it 4-3, Ashley Ponce hit what looked to be a game-ending double...
It appears the Pittsburgh Pirates paid a small price for their ninth straight victory, as a brief bullpen session in the 14th inning from Jeff Locke has them in need of a starter for their opener against Philadelphia.
The Pirates' track record of plugging holes in their rotation, however, couldn't be much more successful.
Heading into July with the best record in baseball...
