Leo Mazzone is no longer the pitching coach of the Baltimore Orioles. I'm heading to Boston to catch game two of the ALCS, but I wanted to talk a little about what happened yesterday since my free time has been at a minimum this week. The writing was on the wall for a while in terms of Leo; however, I think after the All-Star break when the Orioles went from mediocre to even worse. The bullpen and rotation became a mess, and I think his firing was more trying to get rid of the old guard moreso than his skills, but the numbers don't lie — Leo could not work the so-called magic he had in Atlanta.

  • Who do you think they get as a replacement?

Can McPhail turn this team around?
  • I actually thought he did work some magic with Guthrie, putting him in the race for ROY. There are probably 28 other teams that could use his skills. I can understand the argument of making a statement and needing to shake things up, but dumping Mazzone would not have been my first move.
  • I admittedly haven't followed the O's as closely as I have in years past, but it seems to me that the problems with the organization lie in the fact that it's been a three-headed monster for years now, with Angelos and a pair of "general managers" sharing responsibilities and making personnel decisions.

When was the last time Baltimore had a true GM?

With that in mind, I agree with Jack: Firing Mazzone may not be the answer.

They need to put one person in charge, someone who will be held accountable but won't have to get a signed permission slip from Angelos for every personnel decision. Hopefully MacPhail is that guy.

Angelos needs to sign checks, not make baseball decisions.
