OAKLAND, Calif. -- Considering the New York Yankees began Friday's game with 2,023 more career homers in their lineup than the Oakland A's had in theirs, the night's result should have been no surprise. The Yankees hit three homers, including a pair of two-run blasts, on their way to a 6-3 victory. The A's hit two homers, but both were solo shots. New York's starting nine entered the night with 2,294 career homers, including Alex Rodriguez's 636 and Mark Teixeira's 319. Both players had more than the 271 of the entire A's lineup. Teixeira made it 320 with a third-inning, two-run homer that put the Yankees up 3-0, and New York never looked back. In the fifth, Robinson Cano hit a solo shot and Nick Swisher added a two-run homer to increase the lead to 6-1. For a Yankees team that had been inconsistent offensively, it was quite a relief to put up a second consecutive robust performance. New York beat Kansas City 8-3 Wednesday in its previous game. ...

Bronx bombers not giving up hope

You had every reason to dismiss Alex Rodriguez's postgame chest-thumping session on Tuesday night, where, after another brutally unproductive game, he promised he was ready to "go off" and start hitting home runs again. First reaction? Who was kidding whom? A-Rod hadn't gone deep in 52 at-bats, and with only five home runs on the season, the slugger was turning...

Brett admires Jeter, despite the pinstripes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - As much as former Royal George Brett didn't like the New York Yankees when he was playing, he doesn't seem to mind that Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is about to pass him on the all-time hits list. At 3,152 career hits, Jeter is just two hits shy of tying Brett for 15th place all time. "If it's going to be someone and if it's going to be...

The Non-Story that is the Sale of the New York Yankees

Hal Steinbrenner Somewhere, there are sighs, screams, and sounds of heads smacking fine mahogany tables as Bill Madden and Michael O’Keeffe of the NY Daily News wafted out a story that the New York Yankees might be up for sale. Madden, who has many times been right on a story, but just as often not (remember, he said that contraction of the A’s and Rays was on the cusp...
