Ryan Cook was considered sort of the throw-in in the Trevor Cahill deal with Arizona. The centerpiece was starter Jarrod Parker, who has pitched very well with Oakland, too, and who will start at San Francisco on Friday night. And the A's needed outfielders at the time, so Collin Cowgill was considered an important part of the deal, too. Cook was a pitcher recently converted from starter to relief, and while the A's had good hopes for him, they never would have imagined how he's started this season. Cook has pitched 19 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, he's been the team's most reliable pitcher by far, he is excelling late in games and in tough situations, which is why he is expected to be Oakland's closer at some point this season.
