Ryan Cook was considered sort of the throw-in in the Trevor Cahill deal with Arizona.

The centerpiece was starter Jarrod Parker, who has pitched very well with Oakland, too, and who will start at San Francisco on Friday night.

And the A's needed outfielders at the time, so Collin Cowgill was considered an important part of the deal, too.

Cook was a pitcher recently converted from starter to relief, and while the A's had good hopes for him, they never would have imagined how he's started this season.

Cook has pitched 19 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, he's been the team's most reliable pitcher by far, he is excelling late in games and in tough situations, which is why he is expected to be Oakland's closer at some point this season.

On Thursday, Cook ripped the fake nail off his right middle finger on the first pitch he threw and said later it felt like a shotgun went off at the end of his finger.

But he stayed in and pitched a scoreless eighth. Then, with the game tied in the ninth, he was confronted with a tough situation when an error put Michael Young at second base with nobody out.

Cook got Adrian Beltre to ground out, walked David Murphy intentionally, struck out Nelson Cruz, walked Mike Napoli and got Brandon Snyder to ground out.

When the A's scored in the 10th inning to beat Texas 5-4, Cook earned his first big-league win.
