Kevin Correia,
Jose Tabata,
Alex Presley,
Garrett Jones,
Bud Norris
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros
- The Pirates got their third straight win in front of a big crowd yesterday. It was a team win if there ever was one, but Pedro Alvarez was a big time contributor by drawing two walks and coming up with a huge two run single. Kevin Correia made a pretty strong start and the bullpen was solid as always in closing it out. Full recap here
- Jose Tabata was 1/4 with a double in his AAA debut.
- Alex Presley's status is uncertain, but there's a chance he could be headed to the DL after suffering "concussion like symptoms" after Tuesday's game.
- I have audio from Greg Brown's great calls from Tuesday's thriller. Here's Garrett Jones' homer and here's the call on the walk off. Guaranteed to give you chills.
- The Reds lost to the Dodgers late last night and the Pirates have a one game lead in the National League Central. This is the first time they've had a whole game lead in the Central this late in the season since 1997.
- The Pirates will look to get their first four game sweep since 2006 as they take on the Astros one more time tonight at 7:05. Jeff Karstens is taking on Bud Norris.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Offense, Reborn
At the end of May, I observed how the Pittsburgh Pirates had an offense poised for history. They were no just bad at scoring runs, they were great at making outs. They had a team wRC+ twelve points lower than the next-nearest lineup:
I called it a “catastrophe” then, but now it has become a swash-buckle’d turnaround.
In the month of June, the Pirates had a 111 wRC+, good...
Drew Sutton hits walk-off homer to cap off thrilling win
Final: Pirates 8, Astros 7
WP: Joel Hanrahan (4-0, 2.32 ERA)
LP: Wesley Wright (0-2, 3.91 ERA)
A.J. Burnett had easily his worst start since the 12-run debacle in early May against St. Louis as he gave up six runs in 5+ innings. But the Pirates’ bats were able to bail him out.
Down 4-0 in the fourth inning, Andrew McCutchen hit an opposite field two-run homer to cut the lead to...
Sutton finds a home with Pirates
Drew Sutton smacked a walk off solo home run lifting the Pirates to an 8-7 win over Houston on Tuesday night. The Pirates claimed Sutton off waivers June 24 and added him to the active roster a day later. The infielder/outfielder has seven hits in 27 at bats for a .407 average, with one home run and four RBI. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Sutton recently.
Pirates 6, Astros 4
Mike McKenry and Pedro Alvarez drove in two runs apiece, and the Pittsburgh Pirates looked pretty comfortable during their first day in first place, beating the Houston Astros 6-4 on Wednesday.
Kevin Correia (5-6) won his third straight decision as the streaking Pirates moved nine games above .500 (45-36) for the first time since Barry Bonds was swinging for the fences at Three...
Sutton on center stage: Pirates walk it off, 8-7
Half of us are in tears. Half of us are in shock. Drew Sutton looked like he was in both after his walkoff homerun to beat the Astros tonight, 8-7. The Pirates already led the National League in come-from-behind wins – add on another. Down 6-2 in the 6th inning, the Pirates showed that they [...]
Thursday 7/5 Minor League Roundup
AAA Indianapolis | Louisville 7 Indianapolis 5 Tony Sanchez's suddenly scorching bat couldn't will the Indians to win their ninth consecutive game, as the pitching couldn't hold on to an early 2-0 advantage. Gallo: A-to-Z Pittsburgh Pirates bandwagon guide
Since the Pirates are 10 games over .500 and in first place in the division for the first time since Squeezits and Dunkaroos were relavant (1992 for you old curmudgeons), more and more yinzers are hopping on the Bucco Bandwagon. We’re cool with that.
But these new fans that hated the Pirates just last week, may not know what’s going on if htey show up to game now. So DJ Gallo...

Who’s in first place in the National League Central? You guessed it, the Pittsburgh Pirates. If you’re a legit baseball fan you’re pulling for the Pirates to hang on all season. Karstens completes the sweep
Even though the Pirates won the first three games against the Astros this week, they had to come back to win each time. Jeff Karstens made sure that wasn’t an issue on Thursday night as the Bucs earned the sweep.
Karstens was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. He dominated the Astros in three starts against them last season and picked up right where he left off tonight, tossing eight...

Rod Barajas’ week was once again shortened due to his left knee bone bruise. Rod was listed in the lineup 4 times, but he was scratched about an hour before game time on both Monday and Thursday. Karstens finishes off 4-game sweep of Astros
DOUBLE. DIGITS. ABOVE .500. Did anybody really see this coming when the season began with AJ Burnett and Charlie Morton on the DL, when the plan was to platoon Casey McGehee between first and third waiting for Pedro Alvarez or Garrett Jones mess up? Welp, that was Clint Hurdle’s plan…and it’s wroking…it’s working.
Jeff Karstens started his third game last night since...
