NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees were stymied by the Detroit Tigers thanks largely to a rookie left-hander with a promising future and Saturday's replacement for Delmon Young, who faces an uncertain immediate future. Tigers rookie Drew Smyly allowed just two hits in six innings in the 7-5 win, while Andy Dirks hit a three-run homer after starting in left field in place of Young, who was put on the restricted list Saturday. Smyly won his first major-league game in what has been an impressive start for him early in the season. Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in three runs for Detroit. Nick Swisher hit two homers -- one from each side of the plate -- and Curtis Granderson hit one for the Yankees while driving in two runs. After getting shut down for most of the day by Smyly and two relievers, the Yankees scored three times in the ninth against Jose Valverde. Swisher hit his second homer, and Granderson knocked in a run with a two-out single before Raul Ibanez doubled in a ...

Now, it looks like Brian Cashman's latest out-of-the-box pitching acquisition since Bartolo Colon might be the spark the starting rotation needs.
Remember how the surgically...

In reading the blogs and listening to sports radio, it appears many Yankee fans are calling for Brian Cashman’s head over the Michael Pineda debacle, while others fail to find fault on the GM’s part. In this election season, everyone loves a good debate so I will refrain from offering my opinion on the Pineda situation and, instead, comprise a list of Cashman’s starting pitching...

NEW YORK (AP) -- CC Sabathia steadied New York's rocky rotation with eight sharp innings, Alex Rodriguez passed Willie Mays for eighth on the career RBIs list and the Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 6-2 on Sunday despite leaving 14 men on base in the first six innings.
A-Rod drove in two runs for 1,904 RBIs without hitting the ball out of the infield. He singled on a dribbler...
Steroids created a lot of “video game” type of results over two decades. Two records that still were elusive to jacked up hitters was Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak and Ted Williams .406 batting average.
When ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst John Kruk said Derek Jeter can hit .400 earlier this month, everyone blew it off as crazy. Thirty-four games into the season...

The notable mark was reached as Cabrera took a two strike, outside fastball from Ivan Nova and pounded it on the ground past Robinson Cano into right field. Cabrera joins Jimmy Foxx, Hank Aaron, Mel Ott, Albert Pujols and Lou

By Dave BuscemaThe Sports Xchange NEW YORK -- The rookie making his major league debut battled the superstar who had tied a Hall of Famer on the all-time RBI list earlier in the game. It was the bottom of the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium on Sunday and Detroit Tigers reliever Luke Putkonen endured an intimidating initiation in his major league debut. He had pitched into and...
