The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year contract with catcher Brayan Pena.
Pena had a .236 batting average with two homers and 25 RBIs in 68 games last season for the Kansas City Royals. He hit .320 in 50 at-bats with runners in scoring position last season. He has hit .248 with 14 homers and 98 RBIs over eight seasons with the Royals and Atlanta Braves.
The 30-year-old Pena will back up Alex Avila behind the plate.
Detroit president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said Monday the switch-hitting Pena will be a solid complement to Avila.
The Tigers also designated left-handed pitcher Matt Hoffman for assignment. He was 1-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 43 games at Triple-A Toledo last season.

Detroit Tigers Trade Rumors: ‘Plenty of Teams’ Interested in Rick Porcello, but Tigers Not Willing to Deal
Heading into the 2013 season with Rick Porcello as part of the starting rotation would be far from a crushing development for the Detroit Tigers — the 23-year-old has won 10 or more games in each of his four MLB season, including last year’s 10-12 mark.
Still, the Tigers might be able to swing the young right-hander into a big return via trade, especially if the market for Porcello...
Wade Davis: The Best Case Scenario
In the wake of the Kansas City and Tampa Bay trade from Sunday night, many have speculated upon — and Jeff Sullivan has considered with something not unlike aplomb — how Wade Davis might perform in his return to the starting roation (i.e. the role he’s likely to assume with the Royals). As Sullivan notes, Davis was a not particularly excellent starter from 2009 to 2011. Then...

Royals made right move with trade
People will crush the Royals. People always crush the Royals, and they mostly deserve it after nine straight losing seasons, the last 6-1/2 under general manager Dayton Moore.
But not this time.
Not after obtaining 40 percent of their 2013 starting rotation Sunday night without trading a single major leaguer in their stunning blockbuster with the Rays.
Yes, the Royals parted with...
Kansas City Royals Are Building a Contender
Kansas City has been irrelevant in the AL Central for over the past two decades. Since their 1985 World Series win they have had only six winning season, not including the strike shortened ‘94 season, and have failed to reach the playoffs every year. With all that losing came 18 first round picks in the … Continue reading »
Royals acquire Shields, Davis from Rays for Myers
The Kansas City Royals acquired former All-Star James Shields and fellow right-hander Wade Davis from the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday night for outfielder Wil Myers and a package of minor league prospects.
Kansas City has been working all offseason to shore up a starting rotation that has been abysmal for years, re-signing Jeremy Guthrie and acquiring Ervin Santana from the Los Angeles...
NY Baseball Talk: Breaking the Norm 12/9/12
I was joined by former Kansas City Royals outfielder and current host on 810 WHB, Les Norman.
Les and I discussed the wild spending this winter, the value of hitting coaches and the Mets potentially trading R.A. Dickey. Hear his thoughts on whether prospects like Wil Myers and Mike Olt are overrated, and the importance of mental makeup in a ballplayer.

Royals' trade with Rays shows win-now mentality
The Royals' blockbuster trade with Tampa Bay for James Shields and Wade Davis shows that they're ready to start mortgaging their future to win in the present, something that hasn't happened around Kansas City for years.
To do it, the Royals gave up outfielder Wil Myers, widely regarded as the top prospect in the minor leagues, and right-hander Jake Odorizzi, considered...

Two small market clubs made a big hot stove splash when the Royals acquired James Shields from the Rays. Wade Davis will join James Shields in Kansas City, while Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery, and Patrick Leonard will go to Tampa, along with top prospect Wil Myers.

Royals Revival
The Kansas City Royals have been irrelevant in the Wild Card Era. The franchise has endured 17 losing seasons since 1995 and finished above .500 only once in 2003 thanks to this historic night. Basically, if not for the Pittsburgh Pirates two-decade-old disappearing act, the Royals would have the honor of least competitive franchise in MLB.
In recent years, the starting pitching...
Resolving The Royals Rays Trade
Now that the dust has settled and knee-jerk Twitter comments basically reducing Dayton Moore to a sad clown of a GM have subsided (somewhat), the blockbuster deal doesn't look so terribly lopsided in the Rays favor. It's not like Moore completely scorched the Royals farm and salted the earth. Besides, if the Royals win the World Series after making this trade, giant fireballs...
Defending the Royals
Just as parents today must be careful not to coddle their children too much, baseball fans must avoid coveting their favorite prospects. This tendency to prospect overvaluation makes sense, though. After finally learning that signing pricey and mediocre free agents and ignoring the perfectly apt replacements in the minors was the wrong way to go about things, we all got wise, fans...
