Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila exited yesterday's win over the Minnesota Twins after being hit on the left wrist by a pitch from Brian Duensing. His status for tonight's game is unknown at this time, according to Kelly Erickson of MLB.com.
Manager Jim Leyland told reporters after the game that X-rays came back negative, but Avila will require further evaluation today before his return timeframe is know.
"Preliminary X-rays were negative, but we're going to
have to do something when we get back, to look at it," Tigers manager Jim
Leyland said. "Its up a little higher than I originally thought. We have
to wait and see. He was in some pain. We were just afraid he couldn't catch the
ball. We just felt like it was best to get him out of there, don't take any
Duensing hit Avila on the left wirst in the ninth inning of yesterday's contest. Prior to his early exit, Avila ended an 0-for-17 skid at the plate, collecting two hits in the Tigers' victory. On the season, the backstop has not hit .172/.271/.288 with four doubles and five home runs.
