DETROIT The Tigers called up pitcher Thad Weber from Triple-A Toledo between games of Saturday's doubleheader against Texas. Rick Porcello only lasted one inning of a 10-4 loss in the first game, giving up nine runs. Even with Justin Verlander pitching in the nightcap, Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski felt that the Tigers needed an extra long reliever with rookie Drew Smyly scheduled to start on Sunday. Duane Below, Detroit's usual long man, pitched six shutout innings Saturday in relief of Porcello. Weber has been exclusively a starter since making one relief appearance in rookie ball in 2008, but will be in the bullpen for Detroit. He went 5-11 with a 5.65 ERA for Triple-A Toledo last year, but has won his first two starts of 2012, giving up one run in 12 innings. To make room for Weber, the Tigers sent reliever Daniel Schlereth to Toledo. Schlereth has a 10.29 ERA in six appearances this season.

Tigers edged by Rangers in 11th inning

DETROIT -- Yes, the umpires blew a call in the 11th inning of Detroit's 3-2 loss to Texas on Sunday. No one disputes that, including the umpires. That said, it probably didn't cost the Tigers the game. With the score tied after 10 innings, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was forced to use Thad Weber in relief. Weber was making his major-league debut and facing baseball'...

Game 2012.15: Rangers at Tigers

Well, that was quick.  The Rangers put the game away with 8 runs in the first inning before a stunned Rick Porcello could even record a second out.  The Rangers rolled to their 8th straight, beating Detroit 10-4, and have now outscored them 20-7 so far this series. If there was a bright spot for the Tigers, it was another great outing by Duane Below, who threw 6 scoreless innings...

Rangers' win streak ended by Verlander, Tigers

DETROIT (AP) -- Justin Verlander pitched six innings without allowing an earned run, and the Detroit Tigers salvaged a split of their doubleheader with Texas, beating the Rangers 3-2 in the nightcap Saturday. Texas routed the Tigers 10-4 in the first game for its eighth consecutive victory, but Verlander (2-1) held off the powerful Rangers, allowing four hits and three walks while...

Tigers salvage doubleheader split

DETROIT -- Justin Verlander didn't throw a perfect game or even a no-hitter Saturday, but against the hottest team in baseball, it might as well have been. The White Sox's Philip Humber might have thrown a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners, but the Mariners lineup doesn't quite equal that of the Texas Rangers, which Verlander said is the best in the American...

Game 2012.16: Rangers at Tigers

Good pitching beats good hitting. Or maybe the adage should be superior pitching meets incredible hitting. On a day when JV did not have his best stuff, he demonstrated why he’s the best pitcher in baseball by shutting down baseball’s best offense and ending the Rangers’ 8 game winning streak. Ron Washington said after the game “We didn’t lose, we got beat.” + 1. JV’s...

Tigers 3, Rangers 2

Jim Leyland told Justin Verlander he had 20 more pitches, then the Detroit ace went out and made the most of his final inning. First, Verlander struck out Michael Young with a knee-buckling breaking ball. Nelson Cruz was next and he went down swinging - the bat slipping out of the Texas slugger's hands and sailing toward the coaching box near third base. Verlander made it through...

Royals Trade RHP Zach Miner to Detroit Tigers

The Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers announced a trade this morning, sending pitcher Zach Miner to the Tigers in exchange for cash considerations. Miner, who was drafted in 2000 draft in the 4th round by the Atlanta Braves, broke into the Majors in 2006 with the Detroit Tigers and has a MLB record of 25-20 with a 4.24 ERA and a 1.457 WHIP in four season. Miner underwent...

Tigers, Rangers rained out

Jim Leyland is as impressed with the Texas Rangers as he was during last year's playoffs. ''They're such a tremendously solid team in all areas - starting pitching, defense, bullpen, offense,'' the Detroit manager said Friday. ''They're a very good team, top to bottom. They have a lot of nice weapons, they have a lot of versatility. They're...

Rangers, Tigers game postponed by rain

DETROIT (AP) -- In his last four games, Mike Napoli has five homers, nine hits, seven runs and 10 RBIs. The Texas slugger couldn't do any more damage Friday night. The Rangers and Detroit Tigers were postponed because of rain. "It's something you can't control," Napoli said. "We'll go do the split doubleheader tomorrow and start with game one and...

Bunt carries Rangers past Tigers

Alberto Gonzalez's squeeze bunt turned into an RBI infield single in the 11th inning, and the Texas Rangers went on to beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Sunday. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Gonzalez bunted back to pitcher Thad Weber (0-1), who had no play at the plate on runner Nelson Cruz. Weber froze with the ball, and first baseman Miguel Cabrera struggled to get back...

The Detroit Tigers Out Played By Rangers Tonight

The Detroit Tigers couldn’t get their high priced offense moving as the Texas Rangers handed the Tigers a pretty good whopping in Detroit. The Tigers had a night when their pitching staff gave away the farm. Sure the Rangers are a hitting machine, the problem was the Tigers bats were slowed to a crawl by the Rangers pitchers tonight. The Tigers started Adam Wilk who didn’t look...
