The Detroit Tigers have exchanged arms with the Washington Nationals in a deal announced by the team Friday evening.
The Tigers sent former first-round draft pick Ryan Perry to the Nationals in exchange for right-hander Collin Balester.
Perry, drafted by the Tigers in 2008, spent the majority of 3 seasons with the club showing flashes of potential at times while appearing wild at others.
In 2011 Perry split time between Detroit and their Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. In 36 appearances with the Tigers this season he compiled a 5.35 ERA in 37 innings with 24 strikeouts and 21 walks.
Balester, 25, was originally drafted as a starting pitcher out of high school in the 2004 MLB Draft, but has been coming out of the bullpen for the past two seasons.
He also split time between Triple-A and his parent MLB club in 2011. He appeared in 23 Major League games last season, logging 35.2 innings with 34 strikeouts.
