PLAYERS: Miguel Cabrera
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers aren't taking any chances.  With Miguel Cabrera being pulled out of Saturday's game with a minor injury, the team decided to hold him out of Sunday's game altogether.  He is still nursing a sore groin. According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, Cabrera said he felt better prior to Sunday's game, but it seemed like he knew he wasn't playing.  Cabrera hadn't even arrived by the time manager Jim Leyland announced the day's lineup.  With just a few games remaining, the club is focused on getting guys as healthy as possible. "He was much better today," Leyland said. "No activity today, that should help, but it's one of those things that you can play the game and be OK and then have to give a little extra or something and that bothers him. We've got to get some guys healthy." Cabrera has been battling the groin problem off and on for weeks now, so a few days rest here at the end of the season isn't likely to do much.  However, it could keep the groin injury from flaring up to a point that Cabrera has to miss postseason games.  That would be devastating to the World Series hungry Tigers. With 44 home runs, Cabrera trails just Chris Davis of the Orioles in all of the American League.  If it weren't for Davis, Cabrera would be on his way to his second-consecutive Triple-Crown.  He is hitting a league-leading .349/.445/.647 and has 136 RBI.  If you didn't think it was possible, this season is proof; Cabrera got better.  Last year, his OPS was .999.  This year it is 1.092. Miguel Cabrera forced to leave Tigers' extra-inning win with sore groin, return date unclear

The Detroit Tigers need just two more wins at most to clinch the AL Central but Miguel Cabrera's health is still a concern for last season's AL champions. The reigning MVP left Saturday night's remarkable comeback win over the Chicago White Sox with a sore groin and MLive.com's Chris Iott reports that Jim Leyland is not feeling too confident about his superstar...

Tigers Cabrera - with groin strain, not hernia - called 'doubtful' for Sunday's game

Struggling to even trot along the basepaths let alone run Miguel Cabrera left Saturday night’s game with groin pain the Tigers say is not a sports hernia. After the Tigers had come back from a 6-0 hole to beat the White Sox 7-6 at Comerica Park Kevin Rand the Tigers head trainer officially described Cabrera’s ongoing pain as “a left groin strain.” He ruled out any diagnosis...

Miguel Cabrera returns to Tigers' lineup

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera returned to the lineup yesterday after missing Sunday's game due to his lingering groin injury. Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters -- including Jason Beck of MLB.com -- that he won't hesitate to rest Cabrera if he feels it's necessary, but he also said that he will play the All-Star if he's healthy. "If...

Concerns still linger about Miguel Cabrera

DETROIT -- The way things have been going, it's doubtful that Miguel Cabrera will be able to get 100 percent healthy before the end of the season. Of course, the Tigers and Cabrera both hope the end of their season doesn't come for several weeks. Cabrera missed his 13th game of the season Sunday, a 6-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. With only six games remaining in the...

Fielder: Work ethic comes from father

DETROIT -- If all goes well for Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder -- knock on wood -- he'll play in his 500th consecutive game Tuesday night in Minnesota. A blue-collar, lunch-bucket mentality is required to become an iron man like Fielder, who has missed only one game since May 2008. My father was a steelworker in Ecorse, Mich., for 44 years and never missed a day of work...

Game 2013.156: White Sox at Tigers

Detroit Tigers: 91-64, 1st Place (6.0 ahead of Cleveland).  Magic Number: 2 Well, time certainly does fly, flies like Prince Fielder scoring from first on a double, and comes barreling home to this my last regular season post. Time to get myself in playoff shape. With a magic number down to 2, it is possible for the Tigers to celebrate the division title in front of the home fans...

Duck Dynasty stars visit Comerica Park

DETROIT -- The coolest thing about meeting three of the stars of the "Duck Dynasty" reality TV show was seeing that "Uncle Si" actually does tote that jug of tea around with him wherever he goes. That's his constant prop on the A&E show that has gone from cult favorite to mass popularity as the highest-rated cable show. Si Robertson and his nephews, Jase...

Game 2013.157: Tigers at Twins

91 – 65, 2. I liked it better when you got all of your baseballs stats from one place: the sports page. Or really, one to two pages of the sports section. Everything was laid out right in front of you, so you could jump from team to team, or stat to stat, without clicking anywhere or waiting for a page to load. Growing up, I regularly read the Fort Worth Star Telegram and then...

Tigers try to cut magic number to one vs Twins

The Detroit Tigers were unable to wrap up the AL Central in front of their home fans. But considering their weak competition over the final week, they shouldn't have too much trouble doing so on the road. Justin Verlander takes the mound in Monday night's opener versus a Minnesota Twins team he hasn't lost to in 12 meetings. The Tigers' magic number to clinch the...

PHOTO: Tigers rookies become Disney princesses

Aside from the Tiger rookie pitchers towing the Hello Kitty backpack to the bullpen prior to every game it’s become an annual tradition for all the rookies to get in on the humiliation but in the nature of good fun. This year the Bruce Rondon, Bryan Holaday, Hernan Perez, Nick Castellanos, Jose Alvarez, Jose Iglesias and Evan Reed dressed as some of the most disturbing (and funny...

Ninth-inning rally sparks impressive Tigers' comeback

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers tied the game with an astonishing six-run rally in the ninth inning, then beat the Chicago White Sox 7-6 on Saturday night when Omar Infante hit an infield single with the bases loaded in the 12th. Infante's grounder deflected off the glove of reliever Jacob Petricka (1-1) with one out, and the Tigers spilled onto the field with Comerica Park...

Biggest ninth-inning comeback in 66 years helps Tigers beat White Sox in 12

Well wasn’t that captivating? The Tigers who looked as if they were ready to be toe-tagged Saturday as they came to bat in the ninth trailing 6-0 pulled off a last-night-of-summer surprise Saturday at Comerica Park when they scored six in the ninth to tie the White Sox before winning it 7-6 in the 12th on three walks and a one-out infield single from Omar Infante. The Tigers...

Video: Detroit Tigers Trim Magic Number to 2 With Incredible Rally

The Detroit Tigers offered up the latest evidence that you should never leave a ballpark early, with a stirring six-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers trailed 6-0 after eight and had been unable to do anything against Chicago starter Chris Sale. They worked over reliever Nate Jones, though, scoring five runs before Jones recorded a single...

White Sox bounce back, beat Tigers 6-3

A day after perhaps their most embarrassing loss of the year, the Chicago White Sox got a lift from a rookie making his fourth career start. Erik Johnson pitched into the seventh inning, and the White Sox beat Detroit 6-3 to end any chance of the Tigers clinching the AL Central title in their home finale Sunday. Detroit needed a win and a Cleveland loss to wrap up the division in...
