Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander became the second pitcher to be named player of the year by the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Verlander edged Adrian Gonzalez of the Red Sox and Curtis Granderson of the Yankees for the honor, which was revealed Thursday.

Boston's Pedro Martinez in 1999 is the only other pitcher to win it.

Verlander, the odds-on favorite for the Cy Young award, went 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts to lead the American League in all three categories.

Colorado outfielder Carlos Gonzalez won the award last year.
