Brandon Inge's 12-year tenure as a member of the Detroit Tigers is over the team released him on Thursday.

Brad Eldred was called up from Triple-A Toledo to take Inge's place on the roster.

"Brandon Inge has done a tremendous job for this organization for a long time," team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "I realize he had been, for some people, a very controversial player. But from our perspective, I personally want to thank him for everything he has done for us. He's been a true soldier throughout the years."

Inge has served as a lightning rod for the Tigers over the past couple of seasons, ever since his production began a decline that started when he played a half-season with knee tendinitis that required offseason surgery. He had struggled to hit .200 the past two seasons and was hitting .100 with a game-winning home run as one of the two hits he had this year.

"It's one of those things that you can kind of see how things are going before they come," Inge, 34, told MLB.com, "but there's no hard feelings whatsoever. This is my family. This is where I've been my whole career. I'll miss the guys, I will. But a chance to go play maybe somewhere else, it may be a good thing for me personally. But my heart will always be in Detroit, 100 percent, forever."
