PLAYERS: Mike Ilitch
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
If you've ever been to a Detroit Tigers game or watched one on TV, you've probably heard in the background Charley Marcuse, 'The Singing Hot Dog Man. He has been a fixture at the ball park for the last 15 years, selling hot dogs and singing "hot dogs." It's also well known by Tigers fans that he despises ketchup on hot dogs and he wants you to as well. A singing hot dog man is unique, perhaps uniquely annoying, but a singing hot dog man who also tries to force his hot dog condiment views upon others? Well some might think that's downright chauvinistic self-righteousness at its worst.  And so, the Tigers' concession vendor, Sportservice, fired Charley last week. The Singing Hot Dog Man announced the news with a bitter Twitter tweet:  After 15 years the @Tigers finally got what they've aways wanted: I was fired by @delawarenorth #Sportservice this morning. #LongLiveMustard — Singing Hot Dog Man (@SinginHotDogMan) September 6, 2013 The ex...

Singing hot dog vendor for Tigers fired over very American stance

The Detroit Tigers are streaking towards the playoffs, but they will be doing it without one of their most famous pieces. Charlie Marcuse, better known around Comerica Park as the Singing Hot Dog Man, was fired because he hated on…Read more →

Anibal Sanchez Puts On His Ace Hat

Anibal Sanchez could quite possibly be the best pitcher in the major leagues who is never mentioned. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Sanchez mentioned in the same breath as teammates Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander; much less in the same instance as Felix Hernandez, Clayton Kershaw, and Adam Wainwright. In my opinion, he belongs there. Sanchez’s career has been somewhat...

Detroit Tigers: is Peralta the missing link?

The Detroit Tigers are keeping the Jhonny Peralta fire lit, and for good reason. Peralta risked exiling himself from the organization the moment he cheated back in the spring of 2012. When he was finally caught and suspended for 50 games just after the trade deadline this year, the Tigers had seemingly already moved on. Jose Iglesias was brought in to play shortstop just before the...

Tigers open final home stand with win over Royals

DETROIT -- Fall is in the air, Comerica Park had another sellout crowd and you can sense the end of the regular season is coming. The Tigers (85-62) moved a little closer to the postseason with their 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals (77-70) Friday night. The Tigers kept the Cleveland Indians, who beat the Chicago White Sox earlier in the day, at bay, six games back in the...

Game 2013.147: Royals at Tigers

84-62, 1st place, magic # goes to 11. (Basically a lock based on the squiggly lines here.) Well friends, just a few weeks after the Tigers found themselves atop the AL (at 24 above .500), the Tigers may now find themselves without home field advantage unless they make the World Series. The BoSox have been on a tear over the past three weeks and are now 30 games above .500, 4 games...

Fielder, Hunter lead Tigers to 6-3 win; magic number to eliminate Indians cut to 10

Prince Fielder and Torii Hunter put up some big numbers to help the Detroit Tigers reduce their magic number to 10. Fielder and Hunter each knocked in three runs Friday night and Justin Verlander stuck out seven in 6 2/3 innings as the Tigers earned a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Fielder hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Hunter singled home two runs to...

Why Was The Singing Vendor Canned...???

((HT: Model D Media/Detroit News)) Charley Marcuse has made a bit of a career of belting out tunes at the top of his lungs at Detroit Tigers games- as a singing hot dog vendor. He's done it for 15 years at Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park and is either revered or reviled for his approach... Like this... But, after a 10-minute meeting with the folks who run the vending...

Tigers beat White Sox 1-0, cut magic number to 11

At this time of year it doesn’t matter if it was a close game or a rout. A snoozer or absolutely riveting. All that matters is this: Did the Tigers get closer to clinching the American League Central? And when they know that the team closest to them already has lost — as the Cleveland Indians did in a day game to Kansas City 6-2 — the bottom-line question begs even louder...

Podcast: Paul Wezner on WTKA

Paul Wezner joined the Michigan Insider on WTKA 1050 AM in Ann Arbor to discuss the latest with the Tigers, whether or not they should bring Jhonny Peralta back, and what the team's priorities should be as they move in on the playoffs.

Royals-Tigers Preview

The Kansas City Royals might not catch the first-place Detroit Tigers in the AL Central, but they remain a postseason contender. Looking to continue their season-long success against Justin Verlander, the surging Royals try for a third consecutive victory overall and against the Tigers on Friday night at Comerica Park. Kansas City (77-69) has not been to the playoffs since winning...

Will Cabrera be healthy for playoffs?

The exact description has changed over time: first a sore hip flexor, then an abdominal wall strain, and most recently an injured groin. But the essence of the story is this: Miguel Cabrera has been playing hurt for about two months. And now his health is the most pressing concern for the postseason-bound Detroit Tigers. Cabrera said Friday that he feels "much better."...
