Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young spoke before Friday's game against the New York Yankees about his arrest early that morning in New York for a hate crime after attacking a man at Manhattan hotel.

Young went on an anti-Semitic tirade toward a pan-handler at the hotel and then confronted a group of four men, police told the New York Post and the Detroit Free Press.

"I sincerely regret what happened last night," Young told reporters. "I apologize to everyone I affected, the Ilitch family, the Detroit Tigers' organization, my teammates, my family, and the great Tigers' fans that have supported me since day one. I take this matter very seriously and assure everyone that I will do everything I can to improve myself as a person and player."

Young reportedly said vulgar epithets to the panhandler, who was wearing a yarmulke at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. A verbal exchange followed between Young and the other four men and an altercation occurred, the police said.

The dispute continued in the hotel lobby. Young reportedly scratched another individual in a subsequent hotel lobby fracas and the victim had to be treated by paramedics.

Cavitolo said Young is facing an aggravated harassment hate crime, which is a misdemeanor. The police said he was intoxicated at the time of his arrest.

Dan Ollen, Young's agent, said there would be no further comments from Young about the arrest.

"I represent Delmon Young with respect to the incident that occurred last night," Ollen said. "With this matter now in the legal system, Delmon is unable to make any further statements or discuss this matter in further detail. All future press or investigative inquiries should be directed to me. Let me be clear, there are many false allegations regarding the actions of my client and I am confident that the legal process will separate fact from fiction and discredit these reports."

Young is hitting.242 with one home run and five RBI this season.

Young suspended six years ago in the minor leagues for throwing a bat at an umpire.
