Chris Tillman pitched eight innings of one-hit ball, Ryan Flaherty hit his first career grand slam and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 9-1 Friday night to secure their grip on the top AL wild-card spot.
Chris Davis also homered for the Orioles, who started the day one game behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East.
Tillman (9-2) gave up a bunt single to leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik, then allowed only two walks the rest of the way in his longest outing since July 4. The right-hander retired the final 14 batters he faced, and the only run he allowed was unearned.
Troy Patton worked the ninth to complete the one-hitter.
Boston has lost 14 of 20. Starter Aaron Cook (4-11) was knocked out in the second inning after allowing six runs, five hits and three walks.

The Baltimore Orioles celebrated the 20th anniversary of Camden Yards this year. A few more winning seasons and the Orioles just might get back to the sell-out crowds that filled Camden Yards in 1992 and for nearly a decade thereafter. The high-water mark for attendance at Camden Yards was in 1997, when the the Orioles won the American League East with a record of 98-64. That year...
I have a post up this morning over at Camden Depot.breaking down player contribution to this season's team with what GM brought them to town. Enjoy!
BALTIMORE -- Ryan Flaherty hit a first-inning grand slam moments after Chris Davis got a two-run homer, and starter Chris Tillman threw eight solid innings as the Baltimore Orioles rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Red Sox Friday night. The win helped the Orioles remain in charge of their playoff destiny. Victories in three of their last five games will guarantee Baltimore (90-67...
The end of the regular season is almost here, and, judging by the pace of Friday's game, it can't get here fast enough. Chris Tillman allowed a leadoff single to Scott Podsednik, but that was all the Red Sox could muster as the Orioles cruised past them in a 2:23 game to win 9-1. It was a needed win for the Orioles as they try to keep pace with the Yankees in the divisional...
Chris Davis hit his 30th home run, rookie Manny Machado lined a go-ahead shot in the seventh inning and the Baltimore Orioles climbed into a tie atop the AL East by defeating the Boston Red Sox 4-3 Saturday night.
After finishing in the division cellar in each of the previous four seasons, Baltimore (91-67) is now in first place with the New York Yankees. Both teams have four games...
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles honored Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson before Saturday's game with Boston, unveiling a statue of him behind the bullpen in left-center field. Robinson spoke to the press a few minutes later and mentioned the way rookie third baseman Manny Machado's caught his eye. And with the way this season's gone for the Orioles, who else could...
As a “thank you” to fans for their support throughout the 2012 season, the Orioles will hold their annual Fan Appreciation Celebration during their last series of the season when they host the Boston Red Sox for three games, Friday, September 28 through Sunday, September 30 at Oriole Park.
The three day celebration includes many opportunities for the Orioles to give back...
It's been one year since the Red Sox were knocked out of the playoffs by the Baltimore Orioles. In the course of the world, that might not be a very long time. On the other hand, looking back at what's happened to the Sox and O's since then, it might as well have been forever ago. This time, the roles are reversed with Baltimore fighting for a playoff spot and Boston...
Now that’s how you get the bats out!
After I spent yesterday lamenting the lack of offense that had engulfed the Birds over the past four games, they broke out in a big way in their final contest with the Blue Jays of 2012.
Though it looked to be another case of a struggling starting pitcher getting the better of them, as Carlos Villanueva allowed only one run on two hits – the...
The Orioles beat the Red Sox.
They are tied for first.
A win tomorrow and an Angels loss means the Orioles are in the playoffs.
The Baltimore Orioles are so close, they can taste it. They haven’t been in the postseason for a while but they appear to be in good shape to end that drought. All it takes is one more good week – or one more so-so week – and they’re in.
Playing the role of spoiler will be the Boston Red Sox, who could really use a decent finish to head into the offseason...

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. Just when Boston didn't think it could get any worse, Chris Tillman took the mound. Tillman shut down Red Sox hitters, allowing just one hit over eight innings of work on Friday, and left Boston...
