If you were hoping for an injury-free season from you New York Mets you will not be happy with the following post.  We are only one week into Grapefruit League games and yet the Mets have amassed an astonishing number of injuries. Here is a summary of the Mets injuries thus far:

AP

  • Ike Davis: suspected case of valley fever
  • Pedro Beato: right shoulder inflamation
  • Lucas Duda: Has missed three straight Grapefruit League games due to back stiffness
  • Reese Havens: Yet to appear in a Grapefruit League game due to back issues
  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Missed Sunday’s game vs. the Miami Marlins with a right oblique strain
  • Scott Hairston: Has missed most of spring training with a strained left oblique and is not progressing after a trio of cortisone shots, according to Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger
  • Andress Torres: Experienced a tight glute on Thursday afternoon
  • Daniel Herrara: Dealing with a back issue
  • David Wright: Is yet to appear in a Grapefruit League game and is now headed back to New York for further evaluation because of a strained left rib-cage

While the above list is tough enough to bare, Tim Byrdak — the Mets lone left handed reliever expected to make the opening day roster — was added early Sunday afternoon.  Byrdak, who is traveling back to New York for further evaluation at the Hospital for Special Surgery,  told reporters he has been experiencing soreness in his left knee since the offseason:

It was something, working out in the offseason, there was a little discomfort. I actually felt it when I went to sit on the couch one day. I went to put my foot underneath me and I said I really didn’t feel right. But there was no injury, no pop, no sudden movement that tweaked it. It’s been something kind of nagging around. I was pitching with it this whole time. It’s still kind of there. I sought treatment for it and it wasn’t really responding to the treatment. We’re going to have the doctor look at it tomorrow and see where we go from there.”

With no other proven lefty specialist in camp for the Mets this spring, news of Byrdak’s injury is very concerning. In 72 games for the Mets last season, the left hander pitched to a 3.82 earned run average, while holding left handed hitters to a .222 avg and a .604 ops:

So who could possible fill the void left by Byrdak should the left hander miss time? According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, manager Terry Collins mentioned Josh Edgin — who is not in major league camp and has not appeared above Class A — as a possibility; along with Garrett Olson, Chuck James or Daniel Hererra (who as noted above is dealing with a back issue):
