The Cardinals affiliates had another strong night, posting a 3-1 record with Memphis the only team on the losing end. The Cards got strong pitching performances from a couple of top-20 prospects in Tim Cooney (in a losing effort) and Cory Jones. Jones’ fourth start was by far his best as the big righty had struggled all season making the adjustment to High-A. Hopefully Saturday’s outing will be the start of big things. In Round Rock, Oscar Taveras sat out again, for unknown reasons, and the Redbirds offense struggled at the hands of Rangers prospect Nick Tepesch, who threw a shut out. Five Springfield Cardinals’ pitchers combined to shut out the Arkansas Travelers on Saturday. Ronnie Shaban appears to be turning the corner after a horrid start. Like Jones, Shaban was having troubles adjusting to a new level. Anthony Garcia had a big day to back up Cory Jones on the mound. Garcia collected four of the team’s 16 hits in a 9-4 rout of the Fort Myers Miracle. The Peoria Chiefs got strong relief pitching from Joe Scanio and Kyle Barraclough to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Astros’ Low-A affiliate. Here are the highlights from Saturday’s action. Could this be his last AAA start? We will see what happens with Tyler Lyons and Joe Kelly at the MLB level. Springfield – Seth Blair (1-0, 3.09) is coming off a start in which he pitched into the 7th inning. He has gone at least 6 IP last three starts but also has no less than 3 BB in all four starts this season. Palm Beach – Kyle Helisek (0-1, 2.04) has been the tough luck starter for Palm Beach this season. Let’s see if the team can score some runs for the lefty. Peoria – Chase Brookshire (0-2, 11.70) has really struggled in his last two starts only going 3 1/3 innings and allowing 11 ER. He did make a scoreless relief appearance on April 22nd.
