This move comes as no surprise as Clint Hurdle has made it clear he would like an additional lefty in his bullpen. Tony Watson, who was picked in the 9th round of the 2007 draft will get his first call to the bigs. Jose Ascanio, who has looked bad since his activation off the disabled list has been designated for assignment.
Watson, 26, was 2-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 29.1 innings this season for AAA-Indianapolis. Watson started off his professional career as a starter, but after injuries sidelined him for most of the 2009 season, he joined the bullpen for AA-Altoona in 2010 and has looked sharp ever since. Lefties are hitting just .156 against him this season and he is averaging almost a strikeout per inning.
Ascanio, 26, pitched in just 8 games since being activated off the disabled list after not throwing a pitch in the majors since 2009. In those 8 appearances, he gave up at least 1 run in 4 of them. I think Ascanio will clear waivers as I can't see another team putting him...
