Boston sports fans undoubtedly feel a little down right now. Their Bruins were just denied a chance to play in a Game 7 for Lord Stanley’s Cup, the Celtics just traded Doc Rivers and former Patriot Aaron Hernandez has been charged with murder. So, it’s hard to look positively at Boston sports at the moment. But luckily for the fans, they still have their beloved Red Sox, who are sitting in first place in the American League East and have the third-best record in the majors. Not only do the Red Sox have the best record in the AL, but they also had Clay Buchholz pitching like a Cy Young candidate until a neck injury sidelined him, Jose Iglesias on fire at the plate and David Ortiz playing like it’s 2004. All of this success has come with some setbacks, though. Though the team has had its issues, the Red Sox are on top of the AL East, a place not many people expected them to be after their 69-93 season last year. But while the Bruins’ made an inspiring run to the Stanley Cup Final, the...

Buchholz Has Setback During Bullpen, Gets MRI

Buchholz Tuesday (FN Photo)More bad news about the best starting pitcher on the Red Sox. In a bullpen session today, Clay Buchholz felt "discomfort" after throwing only 18 pitches and was shut down again. The Red Sox sent the right-hander to get an MRI on his neck on Wednesday afternoon. No word yet on any results. This prolonged absence from the rotation is highly troubling...

Your Morning Dump...where Iglesias is still en fuego.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. We are at that point in Jose Iglesias’ season where a multiple-hit game no longer draws notice. Seventeen of his 34 games have featured at least two hits. He had three last night. When somebody does a neat...

Clay Buchholz is Having a Cy Young Caliber Season

On August 17, 2007, the Boston Red Sox sent a 23 year old right handed pitcher to the mound by the name of Clay Buchholz, a first round draft pick in 2005, to face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Buchholz had a decent debut outing, pitching six innings and allowing three runs in an 8-4 victory. In his second career start, facing the Baltimore Orioles, Buchholz pitched a no...

Red Sox’ Clay Buchholz shut down with shoulder inflammation

The Boston Red Sox have elected to shut right-hander Clay Buchholz down for the next few days after an MRI revealed inflammation in the bursa sac area of his throwing shoulder, according to Michael Periatt of MLB.com. The good news for Buchholz and the Red Sox is that the MRI didn’t reveal any structural damage to the ailing shoulder. Still, Boston has opted to shut...

Clay Buchholz’s MRI Reveals No Structural Damage, But Pitcher Shut Down for Few Days With Inflammation

BOSTON — Clay Buchholz’s health status is a little clearer — but not too much. An MRI revealed that Buchholz, who hasn’t pitched since June 8, has no structural damage in his shoulder. Buchholz does have inflammation in the bursa sac of his right shoulder, though, and he’ll be shut down for a few days before resuming a throwing program. “As I mentioned yesterday, he had...

Red Sox P Buchholz cuts short bullpen session

Corrects to Wednesday in first paragraph Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz had to shut down his bullpen session Wednesday and is expected to have an MRI later today. Buchholz (9-0) has been on the disabled list since June 9 with a neck strain. The team had hoped he would be able to pitch Tuesday night, but Ryan Dempster made that start against Colorado. The 28-year old right...

Clay Buchholz to Get MRI, Says Injury ‘Not Ready’ After Bullpen Session Cut Short

It looks like the Red Sox’ rotation will have to find a way to keep going without ace Clay Buchholz. The right-hander, who paced the Boston staff with a 1.71 ERA in his 9-0 start, won’t be returning just yet, manager John Farrell said Wednesday. Buchholz tried to throw off a mound for the first time since his June 8 injury on Wednesday but ended up tossing just 18 pitches. Farrell...

Buchholz MRI: no structural damage, no timetable on return

Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer Some news both good and bad came down Thursday afternoon regarding the health of Red Sox ace Clay Buchholz. According to ESPNBoston’s Gordon Edes, Sox manager John Farrell said Buchholz’s MRI on Wednesday revealed the righthander is suffering from bursitis in his throwing shoulder but showed no structural damage. The hurler will remain...

Clay Buchholz’s Injury Adding Pressure to Red Sox’ Rotation, Making AL East Lead More Difficult to Maintain

BOSTON — The Red Sox still sit atop the American League East. But maintaining that piece of prime real estate keeps getting more difficult. Clay Buchholz, who hasn’t pitched since June 8 because of discomfort in his trapezius muscle (located near the neck), is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday. There’s no timetable for Buchholz’s return, but the lingering discomfort he’s...

Red Sox-Rockies Live: John Farrell Reveals Details of Clay Buchholz’s Status Before Game Against Rockies

2:10 p.m.: John Farrell chatted with the media before Wednesday’s game, and the duration of the conversation centered on right-hander Clay Buchholz, who hasn’t pitched since June 8 because of discomfort in his trapezius muscle. Farrell said that Buchholz threw soft toss off flat ground on Wednesday, and he apparently did so as intensely as he did on Tuesday. The right-hander’s...

Allen Webster Looks to Earn First Career Win, Red Sox Try to Keep Bats Hot Against Blue Jays

With Clay Buchholz still on the 15-day disabled list, Allen Webster will get his second straight start in place of the Red Sox ace. Webster will look to earn his first career win and help the Red Sox extend their win streak to four games against a Toronto Blue Jays team that has lost three of its last four games. Webster gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings during his June 22 start...

'Rocky Mountain Fry'; Sox Pound Colorado, 11-4

(Jim Rogash/Getty Images)Ryan Dempster must be wondering why the Red Sox can't support him like this all the time. Boston pounded out a season-high twenty hits on the way to smiting the Rockies at Fenway, 11-4. Four different Red Sox players collected three hits (Dustin Pedroia, Daniel Nava, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jose Iglesias), while Pedroia knocked in four runs in the rout. Dempster...

A little bit of De La in your life

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer Jon Lester left Thursday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays with an apparent hip injury after pitching masterfully for 7-plus innings. This comes after word that Clay Buchholz will have to remain out a few more days with his injured neck not fully healed. Yup, the top two pitchers on the Red Sox staff are ailing. Never good news for any...

Brandon Synder's call-up a surprise to him

Photo from Providence Journal Brandon Synder has been called up to replace the struggling Will Middlebrooks, which I think surprised a lot of people. According to ESPN Boston, he is only .125 on Pawtucket's recent road trip, which, as anyone who knows baseball can tell you, isn't good. But sometimes young guys thrive in the major leagues after struggling in the minors (see...
