Even though they’re only a .500 ball club, the Toronto Blue Jays are just a few games out of a wildcard MLB playoff spot. However, the team has been decimated by injuries in the past month, especially to its pitching staff as well as home-run king Jose Bautista. Alex Anthopoulos, the Blue Jays general manager, addressed their pitching needs on July 20 by completing a 10-player trade with the National League’s Houston Astros. The Blue Jays received relievers David Carpenter and Brandon Lyon as well as starter J.A. Happ. In return, they shipped outfielder Ben Francisco to the Astros along with pitcher Francisco Cordero, four Minor League players and a player to be named later. Anthopoulos said he didn’t want to give up any of the Jays top players, but the club needed some pitching depth due to the recent spate of injuries.
