The Toronto Blue Jays are last in the American League East standings with a dismal 9-14 record.  Not exactly what Blue Jays fans were expecting when the team got all that All-Star talent during the off-season.   On the morning of the team’s Opening Day, the media in Toronto were already predicting the Jays were going to make the playoffs.  As for me, I  thought they (the reporters) were getting a little ahead of themselves, but I didn’t think the team would play as bad as this. Of course, the problem with the Jays is the same problem that has plagued them for years.  Bad pitching, especially the bullpen.  In the recent Baltimore series, the bullpen let the Jays down twice.  In game one, the Jays and Orioles were tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning.  Jay’s reliever, Aaron Loup gave up the game ‘s winning hit and the Orioles got the 2-1 victory. In game three of the series, the Jays jumped out to a 5-2 lead and it looked like Brandon Morrow was going to get the win.  Unfortunately, the bullpen gave up three runs in the seventh inning and Baltimore tied the game 5-5.  Luckily, the Jays won it in the 11th inning 6-5.  It’s too bad Morrow  didn’t get the win.  He had a good day on the mound, going 6.1 innings, giving up only three hits, three earned runs, three walks, and striking out three batters. Mark Buehrle continues to struggle on the mound. It’s not only the bullpen that is bad.  Starting pitcher, Mark Buehrle is not really living up to expectations.  In five starts, he has a 1-1 record, has given up 37 hits, 20 earned runs, struck out 19 batters and has a 6.35 earned run average. In the first of a four game weekend series against the New York Yankees, Buehrle  had a terrible night on the mound, giving up seven hits, five earned runs, and struck out only three batters in 5.1 innings pitched. The weekend series continues tonight with game two.  Aaron Laffey will take the mound for the Jays.
