When the Orioles traded Jeremy Guthrie for Jason Hammel (and Matt Lindstrom), I said " It's entirely possible that Hammel and Guthrie are similarly good pitcher... If the Hammel of old shows up in 2012, there's a good chance the Orioles will have actually upgraded their rotation." It's incredibly early, but so far the returns have been positive: Guthrie Hammel ERA 5.92 1.73 FIP 5.98 2.40 xFIP 5.69 2.74 K/9 1.9 8.7 BB/9 3.7 2.8 HR/9 1.5 0.4 fWAR -0.2 0.9 Obviously Guthrie is unlikely to continue walking twice as many batters as he strikes out (especially since batters aren't really making any better contact against him than they used to). Hammel has looked really good so far though. Here's a rough update of his whiffs per year chart: Year Fastball Slider Curve Change Two-seamer Overall 2009 12.7% 23.4% 46.8% 31.9% 21.5% 2010 11.7% 27.3%...

Orioles win close game last night; Hunter delivers on the mound...

A small crowd last night at Camden Yards saw the Orioles win their second game in a row, and their 10th on the season, as they beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-1. There's nothing like a well-pitched, low-scoring ball game, and both teams did that last night. In the first contest of a three-game set, Tommy Hunter pitched six innings, and only gave up a run to record his second...

Baltimore’s Nick Johnson still hasn’t gotten a hit

When we first brought you the news that Baltimore Orioles DH Nick Johnson was hitless after 23 at bats, we thought it would a onetime thing that we all would laugh about and then forget. But it seems that that may not be the case. You see, a week has gone by and Johnson still hasn’t gotten a hit. After three straight DNP’s Johnson was put into the lineup yesterday where he went...

Orioles Pitching Prospect Dylan Bundy Dominating Competition, Has Yet to Allow Hit This Season

Dylan Bundy is a minor league pitcher in the Orioles system, but could very quickly be making his way to the bigs if he continues his recent run of success. The 19-year-old Orioles prospect has retired 39 of 40 hitters he has faced so far in his pro career, and the lone baserunner was a walk. That means he's in the midst of 13 no-hit innings, with 21 of those 39 outs recorded...

Orioles 3, Blue Jays 0

Jason Hammel pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, Wilson Betemit and Chris Davis homered, and the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 Wednesday night. After limiting Toronto to one run on Tuesday, Baltimore became the first team this season to shut out the Blue Jays. The Orioles are 4-1 against Toronto after going 6-12 last year. Hammel (3-0) struck out seven...

Orioles' Wada may be facing surgery

Lefty Tsuyoshi Wada has an injury to his left elbow and could be facing surgery. There was no specific terminology given to the injury, which Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter deemed "a problem" following Tuesday's 2-1 win over Toronto. Showalter stopped short of calling it a tear, but the issue is with the ligament in his pitching elbow. It's an injury...

Free Dontrelle Willis… Literally

Matt Sosnick feels very strongly about the situation his client, Dontrelle Willis, currently finds himself in. Per Jerry Crasnick’s post on the Willis-Orioles drama at ESPN.com: “I can’t imagine making this kind of deal over something so trivial. We’re talking about a minor league player that Baltimore has relatively no financial investment in whatsoever. It’s the dumbest...

Nick John is Bad

There was a time, not too awfully long ago, that Nick Johnson was a solid MLB 1st baseman. That time is not now, as he's just plain awful nowadays.  Currently he is being paid by the Baltimore Orioles, who despite Johnson's complete uselessness, are in 1st place in the AL East with a 12-7 record.  Johnson has managed to play in 8 games, while stealing 26 at bats from a...
