Since his promotion from Triple-A Salt Lake near the end of April, Los Angeles Angels rookie Mike Trout has taken the American League by storm. However, the 21-year-old's rocket launch to stardom has slowed a little in August. Trout went 1-for-13 during the weekend series in Detroit, going hitless in back-to-back games for only the second time since the start of May (he has not gone longer than two games without a hit this season). He is batting .286 this month with 27 strikeouts, one short of his monthly high this season. August is the first time this season that Trout's average has gone backward. He hit .324 in May, .372 in June and a blistering .392 in July. "It's definitely a long year," Trout said of his slowing pace. "You just got to keep your preparation the same, keep playing hard." Trout still leads the American League with a .337 average, but his lead is now just 13 points over Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera -- his main competit...

Mike Trout high school memories (braces included)

Even though he just turned 21 a few weeks ago, Mike Trout has taken Major League Baseball by storm.  He's the current frontrunner to win the AL MVP and seems poised to take the mantle of the best player alive for the next decade or so.  With all the accolades coming his way, it is easy to forget that he is still but a wee pup or perhaps a guppy or a minnow if we are forced...

Mike Trout: What Could Have Been

Mike Trout is having a season for the ages. The kind of season that has baseball fans checking the box score in the newspaper to see what he did the night before, and team executives scratching their heads wondering how they missed on this kid. If you turned on ESPN last year, the only time you would hear the word trout, was during one of those outdoors shows. It’s funny how things...

Where does Mike Trout’s season rank among other rookie seasons

flickr.com     Nobody can deny the fact that Los Angeles Angels OF Mike Trout has had an excellent rookie season. Similar to Justin Verlander being part of the discussion last season, some people have an issue with the same player winning the ROY and MVP just like Verlander winning the Cy Young and MVP last season. What Trout has done in just 105 games is staggering...

Angels are keeping their hope alive

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- There is still life in the Angels. Not a lot mind you, but enough to keep them pushing forward, watching the standings, looking for an edge. Stranger things have happened. "I saw St. Louis do it," Torii Hunter said Tuesday night. "They were 11 games back last year (and won the World Series). And in 2006 when I was with the Twins, we were 8 games...

Game Recap 8/26/12: Regret - Tigers 5, Angels 2

The Angels still very much have a chance at the playoffs.  It is somewhere between a 1-in-8 and 1-in-4 chance depending on which projection system you ask. Neither are great odds, but they are still "doable" odds.  The only problem is the Angels continue to make the math hard on themselves by not winning important series, like this one for example. Out of their...

Game Recap 8/28/12: It all counts - Angels 6, Red Sox 5

For a while, it looked like Jered Weaver was well on his way to his third loss in a row at home. That would have been the first occurrence of its kind in Weaver's career.  Don't fret. I won't dwell on what could have been a disaster. Tonight's walk-off victory was exactly what the Angels needed to begin this short, 3-game homestand against the Red Sox...
