This afternoon, the two newest members of the New York Mets, outfielder Andres Torres and reliever Ramon Ramirez spoke with reporters by phone. Here is what they had to say according to those who were on the call:

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, when asked how he accounted for the difference between his 2010 (.268, 18 HR, 63 RBIs) and 2011 (.221, 4 HR, 19 RBIs) performance, Torres responded:

Last year I had injuries. I was battling injuries. It was a tough year for me, to be honest with you guys. This year I feel great. I’m training. I’m back on track. I’m working hard on hitting. And I’m ready. I’m excited to go to New York and play my game. I’m preparing to have a better season than 2010, and I feel like I will because, like I said, I believe in myself and I’m just working really hard — really hard — and I’m ready to go for it.”

On what makes Ramon Ramirez and effective pitcher, Torres siad:

Oh, wow, his location is amazing. Ramon is a great pitcher. He locates the ball so good. You know, I’m in center. I always watch pitches. His location. His got a changeup, slider. He’s really good. I told Ramon, ‘It’s amazing how you locate the ball.’ That’s the key for pitching — you locate the ball wherever, on the corners. I think he’s going to be very successful.”

In talks I have had with some Giants fans on Twitter, the words most associated with Torres are “grinder” and “grit.”  Most Giants fans have told me I can expect gold glove caliber defense, locker room leader, and a guy who “leaves it all on the field” as one fan said. Those are great things to hear.  They also have me excited to see what he can bring to the table for the Mets in 2012. However, all the grit, heart, and determination in the world won’t stop me from cursing him if he is hitting .220 with a .312 OBP as he did for the Giants in 2011.

Pagan/Torres swap more then just numbers...

In trading Angel Pagan for Andres Torres the Mets are giving up almost 40 points in in batting average and 30 more strike outs a season.  So was the addition of power arm Ramon Ramirez the only reason the Mets down graded an offensive position on a team that will need to score runs.  Watching the above posted video Kevin Burkhardt and Andy Martino discuss Angel Pagan's struggles...

Mets ornament of the day: David Wright, Pedro and a soon-to-be-jinxed Santa

The Mets had their annual Christmas party today. This has known to be a jinx to the player wearing the Santa suit, and know to be a very good day when Anna Benson showed up in her now infamous elf costume. So today we have a Forever Collectibles version of what the day is like, with Mets players David Wright and Pedro Martinez posing with Santa. Is this a since-departed teammate...

MMO Mets Top 20 Prospects – #3 Matt Harvey, RHP

The difference between the #2 and the #3 Top Mets Prospect is so small, you can’t even see it from here. You would need some extreme magnification to see the difference between these two players. And since someone has to be 3rd, I flipped a coin, of course I’m kidding, I studied long and hard. I crunched the number’s, I poured over reams of scouting reports, made coffee, I...

Bats: Torres Brings Upbeat Personality to Depleted Mets

Outfielder Andres Torres knows he has big shoes to fill on the Mets, having arrived in a trade for Angel Pagan, and joining a team now without Jose Reyes.

The Job Behind The Job?

There are times when you see a very distinct line drawn in the sand between Mets fans. Often times, both sides misunderstand something about the other side, and things get out of control. People who agree with things Alderson are doing are not tired of the same old tricks that never seem to work in NY, and are not tired of bad contracts and overpaid players underperforming. They...

Mets owners take out $40M loan

The owners of the cash-strapped New York Mets have taken a $40 million bank loan while they try to sell minority stakes in the team. A Mets spokesman confirmed yesterday that a single major bank extended it the “bridge” loan in the last month or two. In November 2010, the...

Mets still in contact with Jack Wilson

The Mets continue to have “regular contact” with free-agent SS Jack Wilson, according to a tweet from Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Last month, Jon Heyman said the Mets, Dodgers and Braves are among teams with interest in Wilson, which was confirmed by his agent in the New York Post. Wilson, 34, hit just .243 with a .274 OBP and just 9 extra base hits in 79 games between the...

MLB tabs Sandy, eyes world draft

ADD ANOTHER complex task to Sandy Alderson’s schedule: The Mets general manager was one of three executives named Thursday to represent Major League Baseball in the International Talent Committee, which will discuss the possibility of an international draft.
