Joe Mauer went 3-for-4 and scored the winning run in the 11th inning to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
Mauer, a career .359 hitter at Kauffman Stadium, led off the 11th with a double off Jonathan Broxton (1-2) and he scored on Josh Willingham's groundball single to right.
Casey Fien (1-0) worked two perfect innings to pick up his first major-league victory. Glen Perkins worked around Alcides Escobar's leadoff double in the bottom of the inning to pick up his fifth save in eight opportunities.
Greg Holland, the third Kansas City pitcher, worked out of a 10th-inning jam, which Nick Mastroianni led off with a triple to right. Holland stranded him by retiring Alexi Casilla on a grounder with the infield in, then struck out Ben Revere and Jamey Carroll. Holland struck out four in two innings.
Nick Blackburn, who was just recalled from Triple-A Rochester, held the Royals to one run and seven hits over 6 2-3 innings, while...
BEST OF MAXIM
Unsatisfied with merely owning a jersey of the popular Twins catcher, a clever Joe Mauer fan has decided to take his fandom to a whole new level. In a move reminiscent of the enthusiastic young Spurs fan who had Matt Bonner's likeness shaved into his head, this particular man at Saturday night's Twins-Royals game showed up with Mauer's jersey shaved into the voluminous...
MINNEAPOLIS Cole De Vries' major league career is just seven starts old, and so far it's hard to get a read on what the right-hander can offer to the Minnesota Twins' rotation. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native and former Golden Gopher has had several impressive starts since making his MLB debut on May 24, but he's also had several forgettable outings.
Here is a novel way to walk into a ballpark naked.
This may be the best new way to weir a jerseys around a ballpark. Maybe you’ll fake someone out and make them thing you’re actually wearing a jersey.
For most of 2011, the Royals and their fans figured they had one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball in Alcides Escobar.
They also figured they had a light-hitting shortstop, a fact they were willing to live with.
As it turns out, the Royals and their fans won't have to live with the latter anymore.
Escobar, 26, has emerged as an offensive weapon, so much so that...
Eric Hosmer's prolonged struggles at the plate have again led to him being dropped in the Kansas City Royals' batting order. Manager Ned Yost moved Hosmer from the third slot to the sixth slot Thursday. "It's just that simple as that," Yost said of trying to take some pressure off Hosmer. "He's battling through a lot of different things. Some of...
The Kansas City Royals announced that they have signed veteran catcher Jason Kendall and have assigned him to the Royals' Double-A team.
Kendall, 38, last played in the Majors in 2010 with the Royals. He hit .256/.318/.297 with 37 RBI's and a 91 OPS+ in 490 plate appearances. He missed the entire 2011 season due to a shoulder injury.

KANSAS CITY, MO The Kansas City Royals today acquired right-handed starter Jeremy Guthrie from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for left-handed starter Jonathan Sanchez.
Guthrie, 33, is 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA in 19 games, including 15 starts, for Colorado in 2012. He has pitched well away from Coors Field, posting a 3.67 ERA in 10 games (8 starts) on the road. The six-foot-one, 205...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. We know Jeremy Guthrie spent two years on a Mormon mission. We know he digs bikes. We know he takes the environment seriously.
Himself? Not so much.
On Friday, the newest Kansas City Royal tweeted this: "I just told Dayton Moore on phone that the 1st player I would've chose for HR Derby would've been Billy Butler."
Oh, you cad.
Scott Diamond began the season in the minors, but now has the most wins of any Minnesota pitcher.
The left-hander looks to win a fourth consecutive decision and help the visiting Twins to a fifth straight victory over the struggling Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.
After going 1-5 with a 5.08 ERA in seven starts last year, Diamond opened 2012 with Triple-A Rochester, where...
Lorenzo Cain drove in three runs and Alex Gordon had three hits and scored two runs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-3 on Saturday night.
Cain delivered run-producing singles in the first and fifth innings and he had an RBI-double in the seventh. Cain's three RBIs matched a career high, accomplished twice in 2010 when he was with Milwaukee.
Gordon had his...
Jon Morosi of FOX Sports is reporting that the Royals and Rockies have swapped troublesome starting pitchers, with Jonathan Sanchez heading to Colorado and Jeremy Guthrie heading to Kansas City.
Upon hearing about this deal, my first thought was "holy crap, Jonathan Sanchez in Coors Field!" Sanchez is familiar with Coors thanks to his time with the Giants, and actually...
