Righty Carl Pavano and the Twins seemed to have come to an understanding Friday night: The veteran

right-hander needs to take some time and address his shoulder problem. How, when and where was still up in

the air.

"I think it's coming time where decisions need to be made," Pavano said after a 7-1 loss to the Indians

at Progressive Field. "I need to give myself a chance. This has gone on long enough."

Pavano surrendered seven runs, six earned, on nine hits in 3.2 innings, including Jason Kipnis' first

career grand slam in the fourth, which put the Indians up 7-0 with two outs in the fourth inning.

Pavano, 36, has been trying to pitch through weakness and soreness in his right shoulder that has

plagued him since spring training. The Twins have curtailed his off-day work, given him extra days between

starts and allowed him to stay back on road trips to work with a deep tissue message therapist. It's kept

him on the mound but not made him effective.

Friday's loss dropped Pavano to 2-5 with a 6.00 earned-run average but he's 1-4 with an 8.25 ERA in his

past five starts.

"We'll talk tomorrow and see how he feels and go from there," manager Ron Gardenhire said.

The only Twins starter to pitch at least 200 innings the past two seasons, Pavano has thrown as many as

80 only once in his past six starts, but if rest is the answer, who takes his starts? Righty Nick Blackburn

is rehabbing a quadriceps injury with Class AAA Rochester and has another start with the Red Wings on

Sunday; Anthony Swarzak, effective in long relief again on Friday, is 1-4 with an 8.37 ERA as a starter.

Already the Twins have dipped deep into the minors. Cole De Vries last week became the ninth pitcher to

start a game for the Twins this season. Maybe the 10th is on the way.

"I'm hurting this team right now, there's no doubt about it," Pavano said, "and I have to get back on

track."
