Found April 18, 2012 on Fox Sports North:
The Minnesota Twins designated infielder Luke Hughes for assignment Wednesday in order to free up a roster spot for pitcher Jason Marquis. Marquis began the season in Double-A New Britain as he worked to build up arm strength after missing time during spring training due to a family emergency. Signed as a free agent by Minnesota this offseason, Marquis is scheduled to make his Twins debut Wednesday night against the New York Yankees. Hughes, 27, was out of minor league options, meaning he'll have to clear waivers to remain with the Twins. But given his versatility, there's a good chance another team will claim Hughes off waivers. If he does pass through waivers, Hughes will be sent to Triple-A Rochester. After appearing in 96 games last season for the Twins, he played in just four games (10 at-bats) in Minnesota's first 11 games of the 2012 season. But during that time, Hughes played first, second and third base. He collected two RBI on two hits this year. Last season, Hughes batted .223 with 30 RBI and seven home runs in 287 at-bats. Marquis, 33, has spent 12 seasons in the majors. The Twins are his seventh big league team during that time. In his two starts with New Britain this spring, Marquis was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA, striking out 11 batters while not allowing a walk in 14 innings. Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter.

Twins' Marquis withstands rough first inning

Jason Marquis was spotted four runs before he ever took the mound in his Twins debut Wednesday. He nearly gave that lead right back in his first-ever inning in a Minnesota uniform and his first start since Aug. 14 of last season, when he suffered a broken leg. Marquis' first inning of work as a Twin was a shaky one, as he gave up three runs on four hits and two walks against...

Twins cut Hughes to make room for Marquis

The Minnesota Twins have cut infielder Luke Hughes to open a roster spot for pitcher Jason Marquis, who has been recalled from Double-A New Britain to start against the New York Yankees. Marquis, who grew up in New York and still lives in the city, was set to make his first appearance with his new team. He signed a $3 million, one-year contract with the Twins in the offseason but...

Twins can take plenty of positives from NYC

The Minnesota Twins headed to the Big Apple at the beginning of the week as winners of just two games through their first three series this year. Minnesota was coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of arguably the best team in this early season, the Texas Rangers. It was early, but the Twins were searching for answers. While manager Ron Gardenhire's club lost Thursday...

Twins look to grab rare series win in New York

Paced by Justin Morneau's continued success in the Bronx, the Minnesota Twins are in position to win their first series in New York in almost 11 years. The Twins can accomplish that feat with a second straight victory over the Yankees on Thursday night. Morneau doubled his home run total for the season with two in Wednesday's 6-5 win at Yankee Stadium. The 2006 AL MVP,...

Twins RHP Baker has ligament replacement surgery

Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Baker had elbow-ligament replacement surgery Tuesday. Baker originally was to have an operation to repair the flexor pronator tendon in his right elbow. The Twins said that when New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek operated, he determined Baker's ulnar collateral ligament needed to be replaced. The Twins had said last week that Baker...

Twins' Span, Gardenhire ejected vs. Yankees

Minnesota Twins outfielder Denard Span and manager Ron Gardenhire were ejected in the third inning of Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees. Span objected to a called strike and had a brief exchange with home plate umpire Greg Gibson. He then added a few more words when he returned to the batter's box and was ejected. Gardenhire came out of the dugout to voice his...

Healthy Twins relish two wins in Bronx

For one night, it was almost as if the Twins were back. Better than back, actually, considering they had not won two games in a season at Yankee Stadium since 2001 -- Tom Kelly's final season as manager. Grim realities likely await this club, but its 6-5 triumph over the Yankees on Wednesday night (giving the Twins two of three games in the series) was downright moving -- and...

Twins' Span, Gardenhire ejected vs Yankees

Minnesota Twins center fielder Denard Span and manager Ron Gardenhire were ejected in the third inning of Tuesday night's game against the New York Yankees. With a runner on first and one out, Span took a called strike from CC Sabathia on a pitch that appeared to be inside. Span stepped behind the batter's box and appeared to exchange words with plate umpire Greg Gibson...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Twins 6, Yankees 5

After splitting the first two games of this four-game set, the Yankees and Twins each sent out a question mark to pitch. For the Yankees, it was Hiroki Kuroda, coming off a complete game shutout but also with that shaky debut in Tampa Bay on his record. Jason Marquis of the Twins, a Yankees fan growing up and a 13-year veteran, was making his first career start at Yankee Stadium...
