MINNEAPOLIS -- Hall of Famer Paul Molitor has been named to the Minnesota Twins' major league coaching staff for the 2014 season, the team announced Tuesday. Molitor will oversee base running, bunting and infield instruction as well as assisting manager Ron Gardenhire with in-game strategy. Molitor grew up in St. Paul, Minn., and played his college ball at the University of Minnesota before spending 21 years in the major leagues with Milwaukee, Toronto and the Twins. Molitor spent the 1996-98 seasons with Minnesota and collected his 3,000th hit in a Twins uniform. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004. The 57-year-old Molitor does have previous coaching experience at the major leagues, most recently as the Seattle hitting coach in 2005. He also served as a coach under former Twins manager Tom Kelly in 2000 and 2001. Since 2005, Molitor has worked with Minnesota's minor league teams as an infield coordinator while also assisting with base running. Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe, for one, was excited about the news. He tweeted (@TPlouffe24): "Wow, so stoked to see Molitor join our staff! He's one of the most knowledgeable baseball men I've ever met." Notes: The Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday that outfielder Wilkin Ramirez has been outrighted from the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Rochester. Additionally, the Twins announced that outfielder Darin Mastroianni and closer Glen Perkins both had offseason surgeries. Mastroianni had surgery on Oct. 16 to remove fixation hardware in his left ankle, which he previously had surgery on back on May 5. Perkins had arthroscopic surgery on his right medial meniscus. Both players are expected to be ready for spring training. Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter
