Only the Minnesota Twins could tar an inspiring victory with news that another starting pitcher was hurt and their leading run producer was headed to the disabled list.

Minnesota downed the Detroit Tigers 11-7 at Comerica Park on Wednesday night only to lose catcher Ryan Doumit to a strained calf for at least the next two weeks while right-hander Nick Blackburn had his latest shoddy outing cut short after two innings because of a worsening thigh injury he had failed to report.

The Twins recalled outfielder Ben Revere from Class AAA Rochester to replace Doumit.

Blackburn allowed six runs and saw his earned-run average balloon to 8.37 before determining the pain in his left quad muscle, the right-hander's landing foot, caused him to leave pitches up in the strike zone. He was finished after just 53 pitches.

The problem surfaced during his last start against Toronto, in which he earned his first victory since July 2011. Blackburn said he recovered between starts and felt fine until halfway through his pre-game bullpen.

"As it went on, I wished he would have said something," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "When he came out of the game, he said he felt like he had a knife sticking in his leg every time he landed on it. We'll ad-lib and see. I wished he would have told us before that."

Blackburn did not want to force a reliever into a last-minute spot start and was confident he could battle through despite allowing the first two Tigers hitters to reach and yielding a run on a sacrifice fly.

"I try to tell myself, 'rip your quad in half, do whatever it takes.' To me it feels like I'm physically incapable of doing that," he said.
