MINNEAPOLIS With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, the Minnesota Twins selected Byron Buxton, a five-tool outfielder from Appling County High School in Georgia.Minnesota's pick became complicated after the Houston Astros took Puerto Rico shortstop Carlos Correa with the No. 1 overall pick. Many were predicting the Astros to take either Buxton or Stanford right-hander Mark Appel. Minnesota was expected to select either Appel or Buxton, whichever player was not taken by the Astros.By taking Buxton with the second pick, the Twins bucked a trend they had set over the previous three drafts, when they took college players in the first round of the 2009-11 drafts. He is the highest-drafted Twins player since Minnesota took catcher Joe Mauer No. 1 overall in 2001. Minnesota last took a high school outfielder in 2008 when they drafted Aaron Hicks with the 14th pick of the 2008 draft. The Twins have two picks remaining on the first day of the draft. They'll pick No. 32 and No. 42 overall in the compensation round. Those picks are in exchange for Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel, who signed as free agents with Colorado and Arizona, respectively, this past offseason. Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter.
