Francisco Liriano hasn't pitched out the bullpen since his rookie year in 2006, and the Twins are hoping his recent move there won't last long. "We're trying not to have it permanent," general manager Terry Ryan said Friday. Liriano, 28, was demoted to the pen after going 0-5 with a 9.45 earned-run average in six starts. "We're trying to get him going, to where his confidence, his command, his delivery, his mechanics, mindset are all to the point here, 'All right, it looks like it's time for us to get him back in that rotation,' " the GM said. "We hope it's not permanent." The move was announced after a 6-2 loss to the Angels on Wednesday, one of many aimed at shaking things up for a team that took an 8-23 record into Friday's rain-delayed game against Toronto at Target Field. Third baseman Danny Valencia was optioned to Class AAA Rochester, and the Twins called up RHP P.J. Walters and OF Darin Mastroianni. ...

Twins' Morneau hopes to return this week

MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota Twins designated hitter Justin Morneau, who has been on the disabled list with a sore right wrist since May 6, took about 25 swings off a tee on Saturday as part of his rehabilitation process. Morneau said he did not feel discomfort during the swings. Although he and manager Ron Gardenhire have not set a specific return date, the 2006 AL MVP said he plans to...

Newcomer Walters acquits self well for Twins

MINNEAPOLIS For Twins starter P.J. Walters, Saturday was a study in margin of error. Two pitches, and this would have been a different game. A few centimeters, even, the sharp ding of ball off metal that Walters hoped to hear, and this all would have been different. In the end, the Blue Jays' 2-1 victory over the Twins came down to little more than three two-out hits, one a...

Blind fan experiencing 30 parks in 30 days

MINNEAPOLIS Reggie Deal can tell a lot about baseball by simply listening. As he stood near the batting cage at Target Field prior to Friday's game between the Twins and Blue Jays, Deal could hear how the baseball came off the bat of Minnesota's Trevor Plouffe."The way the ball sounds off the bat, if you're close enough to the plate, sometimes it'll give you...

Youngsters eager to impress Twins coaches

MINNEAPOLIS Darin Mastroianni's major-league career has been brief so far one game, to be exact, prior to Thursday. It was a time he described as a "whirlwind of emotions."On Aug. 24 of last season, Mastroianni made his big-league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays against the Kansas City Royals. He went 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a sacrifice bunt in his three at...

Diamond looks to repeat Tuesday's success

Jose Bautista didn't get much of an opportunity to see if he liked hitting in the Metrodome. The slugger, though, has made the most of his games at Target Field as the Toronto Blue Jays wrap up a four-game series Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. Bautista, who hit 97 homers over the past two seasons, has eight thus far in 2012 despite a .197 batting average. But coming to...

Meet the Twins' top farm system prospect

By JESSE TEMPLE BELOIT, Wis. So much pure, raw, God-given talent radiates from Miguel Sano's powerful body on the baseball diamond that it's understandably difficult for casual observers to focus their eyes anywhere else, even hours before game time. As he whips throws across the field from third base in the afternoon sunlight and later bombs baseballs...

Twins try to gather steam vs. visiting Toronto

Who's to Blame For the Twins?

The Twins are 8-23, the worst record in baseball by a large margin, and there’s no doubt that this is a terrible baseball team for the second year in a row.  It’s incredibly disheartening.  Here are all the things that have gone wrong over the last 18 months, in roughly chronological order: 1) Twins trade JJ Hardy and Brendan Harris for two minor league relievers. 2) Twins...
