MINNEAPOLIS Tsuyoshi Nishioka surely hoped he would make a better return to Target Field than this. But Minnesota's infielder will make his season debut in the Twins' home park after what was a series to forget in Cleveland.Nishioka was charged with three errors and had several other miscues in the field during Minnesota's three-game series against the Indians. He also went 0-for-14 with an RBI and a walk at the plate. Nishioka was not in the Twins' lineup Friday as Minnesota welcomed the Tampa Bay Rays, but he tried to stay positive when he met with the media prior to the game."I mean, every day is a new day. Thinking about today, it's a fresh day," Nishioka said through his translator, Ryo Shinkawa. During the season it's always easy to look back at what you did, but I'd rather do that when the season is over. You just want to look ahead while we're still in season."Nishioka played his first season in the United States last year with...

Minnesota Twins' Hitters Hot Since All-Star Break

The Minnesota Twins' hitters have been incredible since the All-Star break as they lead the Majors with a .285 batting average.  The Twins are also a much improved 13-13 since the All-Star break.   How good have the Twins' hitters been?  How about four guys who have played in just about every game since the All-Star break are hitting over .300.  Ben Revere, who just snapped...

500 wins? 110 shutouts? Never again

MINNEAPOLIS Earlier this season, we asked the Minnesota Twins hitters which of baseball's records they felt were the most unbreakable. The two clear-cut answers were Cal Ripken, Jr.'s consecutive games streak of 2,632 and Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. This time around, Minnesota's pitchers were polled on which pitching record they believe will be the toughest...

Twns' Nishioka struggles badly in return to majors

Second baseman Tsuyoshi Nishioka's re-entry into the major leagues has been rocky. In three games since being recalled from Class AAA Rochester, he has been charged with three errors and generally has looked overmatched. At the plate, he's 0 for 12 with a sacrifice fly, a walk and a strikeout. By season's end, the Minnesota Twins will have paid Nishioka $6 million and...

'Pitching is the name of the game'

The first season of his return as the general manager of the Minnesota Twins hasn't gone exactly as Terry Ryan had hoped. His team is 49-62 and in fourth place after a loss to Cleveland on Wednesday. Remember, this is Ron Gardenhire’s fault

With Tsuyoshi Nishioka back with the Twins, and having been a disaster in his series with the Indians, it reminded me of the poor decision making, the cajoling of Ron Gardenhire, and bad strategy that led to this. The halcyon days of 2011. Let’s hit the wayback machine, shall we? Twins target velocity in Year 2 of new ballpark Ah yes, Velocity! I think everyone realizes that the...

First inning does Twins in again, versus Rays

MINNEAPOLIS After facing just three batters Saturday night, it appeared highly unlikely that Twins starter Nick Blackburn would pitch deep into the game against Tampa Bay.But unlike starter Cole De Vries the night before, Blackburn was able to make adjustments after his three-run first inning. The Twins right-hander settled down and pitched into the seventh inning. He exited the...

Q&A: Ben Revere and Anthony Rizzo, Adjusting to Stardom

Ben Revere and Anthony Rizzo are distinctly different hitters, but they have a few things in common. Most notable is the fact that they are rising stars: Revere with the Minnesota Twins; Rizzo with the Chicago Cubs. Another is that they each credit a minor-league hitting coach for helping them turn the corner. Revere, a 24-year-old outfielder, is following up a so-so rookie campaign...

Plouffe almost ready to return to Twins

The Twins hope they're close to regaining the services of third baseman Trevor Plouffe, who was sent out on a rehab assignment with Class AAA Rochester after the team's 12-6 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday.Plouffe hasn't played since suffering nerve damage in his thumb while batting in a 2-1 victory at Kansas City on July 20.
