The spring training roster continues to shrink for the Minnesota Twins, as they made four cuts Tuesday. Outfielder Joe Benson and right-hander Jeff Manship were both optioned to Triple-A Rochester. The Twins also reassigned catcher Rene Rivera and infielder Pedro Florimon to the minor league camp. Benson, 24, made his big league debut last September with the Twins, making the jump from Double-A New Britain to the majors. In 21 games, he batted .239 with six doubles in 71 at-bats. This spring, Benson was hitting .262 with a pair of home runs and 10 RBIs in 42 at-bats. "He's got all the tools. Now it's about harnessing that," Gardenhire said of Benson earlier this month. "Making it to the big leagues (last year) is a good thing. He saw what he needed to work on." Manship, 27, broke into the majors in 2009 with Minnesota and has pitched 29 total games with the Twins over the past three seasons. Last year, he had just five appearances at the major league level, allowing three runs on five hits in 3 13 innings. This spring, Manship allowed five earned runs on nine hits in 8 23 innings. He was battling for a spot in the Twins bullpen, perhaps the toughest competition this spring. Rivera was used as a backup catcher in 45 games last season when Joe Mauer was out with injuries. Rivera batted .144 with five RBIs in 104 at-bats. Florimon made his big league debut last season with Baltimore, appearing in four games. With Tuesday's moves, Minnesota now has 34 players in camp with less than two weeks remaining in spring training. Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter.
