Joel Zumaya admitted that he is contemplating retirement.

The Minnesota Twins reliever made the proclamation one day removed from being diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Tommy John surgery is on deck for Zumaya is he wishes to return to baseball.

Zumaya's latest setback came after he cut short a bullpen session Saturday, throwing only 13 pitches before feeling pain in his elbow.

An MRI exam on Sunday revealed the severity of the injury. Zumaya will visit Dr. James Andrews this week.

The 27-year-old Zumaya has not appeared in a game since June 28, 2010, when he broke his right elbow while delivering a pitch.

He has not made more than 31 appearances in a season since his rookie year in 2006, when he burst onto the scene with a blazing fastball that regularly eclipsed 100 mph.

The Twins signed Zumaya to a one-year, $850,000 contract full of incentives for the upcoming season.
